DIAGNOSIS

1. Check the treadwear on the rear tires. Does either tire have an uneven wear pattern?

Yes - Go to step 2.

No - Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

2. Swap the rear tires with known-good tires, then test-drive the vehicle.

Do you hear a howl or growl from the rear wheel(s)?

Yes - Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

No - This service bulletin does not apply. Replace the rear tires (if authorized by the client), then troubleshoot the tire wear problem.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Raise the vehicle on a lift.

2. Remove the wheel nuts and the rear wheel.

3. Remove the brake hose mounting bracket, the brake caliper bracket mounting bolts, and the brake caliper.

NOTE:
To avoid brake hose and brake caliper damage, use a short piece of wire to hang the caliper from the undercarriage.

4. Remove the brake disc flat screws, then remove the brake disc from the hub.

NOTE:
If the brake disc is stuck to the hub, thread two 8 x 1.25 mm bolts into the brake disc to push it away from the hub. Turn each bolt 90 degrees at a time to prevent the brake disc from binding.

5. Remove the hub bearing unit and its 0-ring from the wheel (four bolts).

6. Check for rust on the hub bearing unit. Is there rust on the hub beading unit?

Yes - Go to step 7.

No - Go to step 8.

7. Replace the wheel sensor. For correct wheel sensor installation and sealing, make sure to install the flat washer (included in the wheel sensor kit) onto the sensor bolt. Torque the sensor bolt and the sensor wire harness bolt to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).

8. Install a new hub bearing unit with a new 0-ring. Torque the hub bearing unit bolts to 64 N.m (47 lb-ft).

9. Reinstall the brake disc. Torque the brake disc flat screws to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).

10. Reinstall the brake caliper. Torque the caliper bracket mounting bolts to 74 N.m (54 lb-ft).

11. Reinstall the brake hose mounting bracket, and torque the bolt to 22 N.m (16 lb-ft).

12. Reinstall the rear wheel. Torque the wheel nuts to 108 N.m (80 lb-ft).

13. If needed, repeat steps 2 thru 12 on the other side.
