Safety Recall: 2004-08 TSX Power Steering Feed Hose Leak
BACKGROUND
Prolonged high under-hood temperatures may cause the power steering hose to deteriorate prematurely and may cause the hose to crack and leak power steering fluid. Power steering fluid leaking onto a hot exhaust pipe will generate smoke and could lead to an under-hood fire.
CLIENT NOTIFICATION
All owners of potentially affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this campaign. An example of the client notification is at the end of this service bulletin.
To verify vehicle eligibility, check at least one of these items:
^ The client has a notification letter.
^ The vehicle is shown as eligible on a VIN status inquiry.
In addition, check for a punch mark above the seventh character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means this campaign has already been completed.
Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your used vehicle inventory. According to federal law, these vehicles cannot be sold until they are repaired. To see if a vehicle is affected by this campaign, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it.
Some of the vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new vehicle inventory. These vehicles must be inspected, and repaired if needed, before they are sold or leased. Should an unrepaired vehicle that was in inventory, or that came in for service after this service bulletin was issued, cause an injury or property damage because of the campaigned item, the dealership will be solely responsible to the damaged party, and will be required to defend and indemnify American Honda for any resulting claims.

Install a power steering feed hose kit.

(Each vehicle requires two 12 oz. bottles.)

REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE:
Take care not to spill power steering fluid on the body and other parts. Wipe off any spilled fluid at once.
1. Raise the power steering reservoir, then disconnect the return hose, and drain the reservoir. Plug the return hose nipple with a suitable cap.
2. Connect a hose of suitable diameter to the disconnected return hose, and put the hose end in a suitable container.
3. Start the engine, let it run at idle, and turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock several times. When fluid stops running out of the hose, shut off the engine. Discard the fluid.
NOTE:
Inspect the reservoir screen for any debris. If the reservoir screen is clogged, replace the reservoir.
4. Remove the cap from the return hose nipple on the reservoir, then reinstall the return hose on the reservoir.
5. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.
6. Remove the power steering heat shield, then lower the vehicle to the ground.
7. Disconnect the power steering pressure switch connector.
8. Remove the power steering feed hose bracket from the cylinder head.
9. Remove the two bolts from the end of the P/S feed hose, then remove the hose from the power steering pump.
NOTE:
To prevent fluid from dripping, wrap a towel around the exposed end of the hose.
10. Remove the feed hose/line holder mounting bolts and the feed hose/line holders.
11. Disconnect the power steering feed hose from the gearbox by loosening its flare nut.
12. Within the rear engine mount base, position the feed hose toward the front of the vehicle. Pull the feed hose toward the right side of the engine compartment, then route the hose through and out of the rear engine mount base.
13. Remove the power steering pressure switch from the original feed hose, then install it on the new feed hose with a new 0-ring. Torque the switch to 12 N.m (8.8 lb-ft).
14. Install the new power steering feed hose in the reverse order of removal.
NOTE:
Before you install the feed hose, cover the rack end with tape. This helps to prevent dirt or debris from entering the hose during installation.
^ Torque the gearbox flare nut on the new feed hose to 42 N.m (31 lb-ft).
^ Torque the power steering pump feed hose bolts toll N.m (8.1 lb-if).
^ Torque the feed hose/line holder mounting bolts and the power steering heat shield bolt to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).
^ Torque the feed hose bracket bolt to 12 N.m (8.8 lb-ft).
15. Refill the power steering reservoir to the upper level line with Acura Precision Crafted Power Steering Fluid.
16. Start the engine, run it at a fast idle, and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times. This will bleed any air from the power steering system.
17. Recheck the fluid level, and add more if needed. Do not fill the reservoir above the upper level line.
NOTE:
^ Make sure you remove all shop towels used during the procedure.
^ Wipe off any spilled power steering fluid.
18. Center-punch a completion mark above the seventh character of the engine compartment VIN.
