Campaign - Navigation Display Defect: Overview

05-029

September 3, 2005

Applies To:
2005 TL with Navigation - From VIN 19UUA6...5A000001 thru 19UUA6...5A030286

Product Update: DTC B1161 with Outside Air Temperature Displays Three Dashes (---), or Intermittent Dead Battery

BACKGROUND

An Internal Center Panel Module BCAN communication error allows the navigation display unit to remain on after the vehicle has been shut off.

The resulting parasitic draw can result in a dead battery or these other symptoms: outside air temperature (OAT) displays three dashes; DTC B1161; inoperative rear defroster; driver position memory system (DPMS) loses memory position; lost audio presets; or lost hands-free link icon from subdisplay.

NOTE:
^ If the outside ambient temperature exceeds 113°F, the OAT will display three dashes. This is normal.

^ DTC B1161 does not appear in the service manual, but it can occur on the 2005 TL.

CLIENT NOTIFICATION

All owners of affected vehicles will be mailed a notification of this campaign. A copy of the client notification is shown in this service bulletin.

NOTE:
Not all vehicles within the VIN range are affected.

Some of the affected vehicles are still in dealer inventory. These vehicles must be repaired before retail sale or lease.

Before beginning work on a vehicle, verify its eligibility by checking at least one of these items:

^ The client has a notification letter.

^ The vehicle is shown on your campaign responsibility report.

^ The vehicle is shown as eligible on a VIN status inquiry.

In addition to these verification items, check for a punch mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means this campaign has already been completed.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Install a subcontrol unit and harness (delay box assembly).

^ SRS components are located in the dashboard area. Review the SRS component locations and the precautions and procedures before performing repairs or service.

^ Put on gloves to protect your hands.

^ Take care not to scratch the dashboard and related parts.

^ Lay a workshop towel under the parts when working on them to protect the face panel from scratches or other damage.

1. Check for and clear DTC B1161 with the HDS.

2. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the audio and navigation systems.

3. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then disconnect the positive cable.

4. Remove the center console rear section:

^ Refer to page 20-79 of the 2004-05 TL Service Manual, or

^ Online, enter keyword CONSOLE, then select Center Console Rear Section Removal/Installation from the list.

5. Remove the center console panel.

^ Refer to page 20-80 of the service manual, or

7. Remove the four bolts, and pull out the audio- HVAC display module assembly.

9. Using isopropyl alcohol, clean the subcontrol unit attachment area on the back of the navigation display.

10. Peel off the adhesive backing, but do not attach the subcontrol unit until you have lined up the two small locating push clips in the holes. Once the clips are aligned, attach the subcontrol unit to the display, then push on the clips to lock them into the display.

11. Connect the subcontrol unit to the navigation display:

^ Connect the vehicle harness 14P connector to the subcontrol unit connector marked "FROM VEHICLE."

^ Connect the subcontrol harness to the connector on the subcontrol unit marked "TO CPM."

^ Connect the subcontrol harness to the navigation display.

^ Use a wire tie to secure the subcontrol harness to the subcontrol unit.

NOTE:
The 14P connector is unique and will only plug into one location on the navigation display.

12. Install the audio-HVAC display module assembly in the reverse order of removal, noting these items:

^ Make sure all the connectors and the antenna lead are secure.

^ Reconnect the battery cable, positive cable first, then the negative cable.

^ Enter the anti-theft codes for the radio and navigation system.

13. Center-punch a completion mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN.

14. Reinitialize the navigation system per service bulletin 03-013: TL and TSX: TQI of the DVD Navigation System with Voice Recognition.

15. Verify proper operation of the audio system.
