DTC 87-31

DTC 87-31, 87-32: Side Airbag Cutoff Indicator Stays ON/OFF

1. Erase the DTC memory
2. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and check that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.

Does the SRS indicator go off and stay off?

YES - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Go to Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures. Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview If another DTC is indicated, go to the DTC Troubleshooting Index. Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions

NO - Go to step 3.

3. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Make sure nothing is on the front passenger's seat.




4. Disconnect the OPDS unit harness 8P connector D from the OPDS unit.
5. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).




6. Check for voltage between the No. 3 terminal of the OPDS unit 8P connector D and body ground. There should be battery voltage.

Is there battery voltage?

YES - Faulty OPDS unit or gauge control module; replace the OPDS unit. If the problem is still present, replace the gauge control module.

NO - Go to step 7.

7. Turn the ignition switch OFF.




8. Disconnect gauge control module connector B (18P) from the gauge control module.




9. Check resistance between the No. 3 terminal of the OPDS unit 8P connector D and body ground. There should be an open circuit or at least 1 MOhms.

Is the resistance as specified?

YES - Go to step 10.

NO - Short to ground in the OPDS unit harness, floor wire harness, or dashboard wire harness; replace the faulty harness.




10. Check resistance between the No. 3 terminal of the OPDS unit 8P connector D and the No. 12 terminal of gauge assembly connector B (18P). There should be 0-1.0 Ohm.

Is the resistence as specified?

YES - Replace the gauge control module.

NO - Open in the OPDS unit harness, floor wire harness, or dashboard wire harness; replace the faulty harness.
