DTC P0716: Problem in Input Shaft (Mainshaft) Speed Sensor Circuit2006 Model
NOTE:
^ Record all freeze data and review General Troubleshooting Information before you troubleshoot.
^ This code is caused by an electrical circuit problem and cannot be caused by a mechanical problem in the transmission.
1. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
2. Check for proper input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor installation.
3. Raise the front of the vehicle, make sure it is securely supported, and allow the front wheels to rotate freely.
4. Start the engine, disable the VSA by pressing the VSA OFF switch, run the vehicle in the D position, and hold the vehicle at speed 30 mph (48 km/h) for more than 10 seconds, then slow down and stop the wheels.
5. Monitor the OBD status for P0716 with the DTC Monitor Tool in DTCs/Freeze Data in A/T Mode Menu for a pass/fail.
Does the result indicate FAILED?
YES - Go to Step 6.
NO - If the tester indicates PASSED, intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor and PCM. If the tester indicates NOT COMPLETED, return to step 4 and recheck.
6. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
7. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
8. Disconnect PCM connectors A (31P) and B (24P), and the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector.
9. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminals A3 and body ground, and between B15 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Go to Step 10.
NO - Repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminals A3, B15, and ground (G101, G102), or repair poor ground (G101, G102), then go to step 30.
10. Connect PCM connectors A (31P) and B (24P).
11. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
12. Measure the voltage between input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector terminal No. 1 and body ground.
Is there about 5 V?
YES - Go to Step 13.
NO - Go to step 25.
13. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
14. Disconnect PCM connector D (17P).
15. Check for continuity between input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector terminal No. 2 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short to ground in the wire between PCM connector terminal D8 and input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor, then go to step 30.
NO - Go to step 16.
16. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
17. Check for continuity between input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector terminal No. 3 and PCM connector terminal C12.
Is there continuity?
YES - Go to step 18.
NO - Repair open in the wire between the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector and PCM connector terminal C12, then go to step 30.
18. Reconnect PCM connector C (22P) and D (17P).
19. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
20. Measure the voltage between input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector terminals No. 2 and No. 3.
Is there about 5 V?
YES - Go to step 21.
NO - Go to step 29.
21. Connect the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector.
22. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals D8 and A3.
Is the voltage 0 V or about 5 V?
YES - Go to step 23.
NO - Replace the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor, then go to step 30.
23. Shift to the P position. Start the engine, and let it idle.
24. With the engine idling, measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals D8 and A3.
Is there 1.5 - 3.5 Volts?
YES - Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM, then recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good PCM, replace the original PCM.
NO - Replace the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor, then go to step 30.
25. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals C14 and A3.
Is thereabout 5 V?
YES - Repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminal C14 and the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor, then go to step 30.
NO - Go to step 26.
26. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
27. Disconnect PCM connector C (22P).
28. Check for continuity between PCM connector terminal C14 and body ground.
Is there continuity?
YES - Repair short to ground in the wire between PCM connector terminal C14 and the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor, then go to step 30.
NO - Check for loose or poor connections at PCM connector terminal C14. If the connection is OK, update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM, then recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good PCM, replace the original PCM.
29. Measure the voltage between PCM connector terminals D8 and A3.
Is there about 5 V?
YES - Repair open in the wire between PCM connector terminal D8 and the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor, then go to step 30.
NO - Check for loose or poor connections at PCM connector terminal D8. If the connection is OK, update the PCM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good PCM, then recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good PCM, replace the original PCM.
30. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
31. Test-drive the vehicle for several minutes under the same conditions as those indicated by the freeze data.
32. Monitor the OBD status for P0716 with the DTC Monitor Tool in DTCs/Freeze Data in A/T Mode Menu for a pass/fail.
Does the result indicate PASSED?
YES - Troubleshooting is complete.
NO - Return to step 1 and recheck.
