VSA DTC Troubleshooting: 86-12, 86-13

DTC 86-12:

F-CAN Communication With PCM (Engine) Malfunction

DTC 86-13:

F-CAN Communication With PCM (A/T) Malfunction

NOTE:

- Troubleshoot any fuel and emissions DTCs first.
- Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

2. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

4. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph(10 km/h) or more.

NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.

5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC 86-12 or 86-13 indicated?

YES -

If DTC 86-11 is indicated at the same time, do the DTC 86-11 troubleshooting first 86-11. If DTC 86-11 is not indicated, go to step 6.

NO -

If any other DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting. If DTCs are not indicated, intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for loose terminals between PCM connector A (49P) and the VSA modulator-control unit 36P connector. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting.�

6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

7. Short the SCS line with the HDS.

8. Disconnect PCM connector A (49P) Service and Repair.

9. Disconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 36P connector Service and Repair.

10. Check for continuity between the VSA modulator-control unit 36P connector terminal and PCM connector A (49P) terminal (see table).









Is there continuity?

YES -

Go to step 11.

NO -

Repair an open in the wire between the PCM and the VSA modulator-control unit.�

11. Reconnect all connectors.

12. Update the PCM if it does not have the latest software Service and Repair, or substitute a known-good PCM.

13. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

14. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

15. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph(10 km/h) or more.

NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.

16. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC 86-12 or 86-13 indicated?

YES -

Go to step 17.

NO -

If the PCM was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the PCM was substituted, replace the original PCM Service and Repair.�

17. Update the VSA modulator-control unit if it does not have the latest software Testing and Inspection. If the unit already has the latest software, substitute a known-good VSA modulator-control unit Service and Repair.

18. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

19. Test-drive the vehicle at 6 mph(10 km/h) or more.

NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.

20. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC 86-12 or 86-13 indicated?

YES -

Check for loose terminals in the VSA modulator-control unit 36P connector. If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated, substitute a known-good VSA modulator-control unit Service and Repair, then retest. If the VSA modulator-control unit was substituted, go to step 1.

NO -

If the VSA modulator-control unit was updated, troubleshooting is complete. If the VSA modulator-control unit was substituted, replace the original VSA modulator-control unit Service and Repair. If any other DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting.�
