Headliner Removal/Installation

NOTE:
- Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.
- When prying with a flat-tip screwdriver, wrap it with protective tape to prevent damage.
- Take care not to bend or scratch the headliner.
- Be careful not to damage the dashboard or the interior trim.
1. Remove these items:
- A-pillar trims, both sides
- B-pillar upper trims, both sides
- C-pillar trims, both sides
- Roof console Roof Console Replacement
- Front individual map light Front Individual Map Light Replacement
- Rear individual map light Rear Individual Map Light Test/Replacement
2. From both sides, release the tabs (A) with the appropriate trim tool, then turn the sunvisor cap (B), and remove it from the bracket (C).
3. From both sides, remove the sunvisor (A) and the holder (B).
1. Remove the self-tapping ET screws.
2. Remove the sunvisor from the body and the holder.
3. Disconnect the vanity mirror light connector (C).
4. Push the hook (D) with a flat-tip screwdriver, then turn the holder 90 °, and then pull it out.
4. Remove the caps (A), and remove the screws, then remove the grab handles (B).
5. Detach the clips, then remove the high mount brake light cover (A).
6. Remove the headliner (A).
1. Pull out the front door opening trim (B) and the rear door opening trim (C) from the headliner.
2. Detach the rear clips by pulling down the rear portion of the headliner.
3. With the help of an assistant, release the Velcro fasteners (D) by pulling down the front portion of the headliner, and release the headliner from the moonroof frame (E) by sliding the headliner rearward.
4. Carefully lower the headliner.
NOTE: Wire harness and antenna lead on the headliner are not shown in this illustration.
7. Remove the cushion tapes, and disconnect the front microphone connectors (A), the rear microphone connectors (B), and the moonroof subharness connector (C), then remove the ANC/Active sound control subharness (D) and the roof wire harness (E) from the headliner (F).
8. Remove the headliner through the front passenger's door opening.
NOTE: Do not to bend the headliner. Bending the headliner will crease and damage it.
9. If necessary, remove the clips (A) from the grab handle brackets (B).
10. If necessary, remove the bolts, then remove the roof console bracket (A) by releasing two hooks (B).
11. Install the headliner in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:
- If the side curtain airbag has deployed, replace the headliner, the sunvisor on deployed side, and the grab handle on deployed side, along with the other parts listed for side curtain airbag deployment Service and Repair.
- To prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying improperly and possibly causing injury, inspect the headliner and all removed trim. Replace any pieces with the following damage:
- Any crease or tears in the headliner (A)
- Any fastener (B) or clip base (C) which have come off the headliner
- Any damage around the grab handle holes (D) or the sunvisor holes (E) in the headliner
- Any cracks or breakage in the grab handle (F)
- Any cracks in the sunvisor stay base (G)
- Any bends or cracks in the sunvisor stay shaft (H)
- Any cracks in the sunvisor base (I)
- Any cracks or breakage in the vanity mirror base (J)
- Any deformations in the grab handle bracket
- Replace any damaged parts with new ones.
- Replace the removed cushion tapes with new ones.
- Push the clips, the fasteners, and the hooks into place securely.
- If the clips are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
- Make sure each connector is plugged in properly.
- Make sure the grab handle clips (K) are installed securely to the grab handle bracket (L).
- Make sure the headliner overlaps the trim pieces correctly.
- When reinstalling the headliner through the door opening, be careful not to fold or bend the headliner. Also, be careful not to scratch the body.
- Check that both sides of the headliner are securely attached to the trim.
- If the threads on a visor screw are worn out, use an oversized self-tapping ET screw made specifically for this application.
NOTE: Refer to the Parts Catalog if you need to use an ET screw.
