Engine Removal




Engine Removal

Special Tools Required

- Universal Lifting Eyelet 07AAK-SNAA120
- Engine Hanger Adapter VSB02C000015
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016

NOTE:

- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- To avoid damaging the wiring and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.

1. Open the hood, and secure it with the hood support rod (A) in the wide-open position (B).





2. Relieve the fuel pressure Service and Repair.

3. Remove the front grille cover Front Grille Cover Replacement.

4. Do the battery removal procedure Removal and Replacement.

5. Remove the air cleaner Service and Repair.

6. Remove the strut brace Frame Brace Replacement.

7. Remove the harness clamps (A).





8. Disconnect the ECM/PCM connectors (B).

9. Remove the ECM/PCM assembly (C) with the bracket.

10. Remove the battery cables (A) from the under-hood fuse/relay box.





11. Remove the harness clamps (B).

12. Disconnect the starter subharness connector (C), then remove the connector from the bracket.

13. Disconnect the engine wire harness connector (D).

14. Disconnect the EVAP canister hose (A) and the brake booster vacuum hose (B).






15. Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose (B) Fuel Line/Quick-Connect Fitting Removal.






16. M/T model: Remove the shift cable. Do not bend the cables excessively.

17. M/T model: Remove the clutch slave cylinder and the clutch line bracket mounting bolt.

18. Remove the drive belt Service and Repair.

19. Remove the radiator cap.

20. Raise the vehicle on the lift.

21. Remove the front wheels.

22. Remove the front splash shield.





23. Loosen the drain plug in the radiator, and drain the engine coolant Service and Repair.

24. Drain the engine oil Service and Repair.

25. Drain the transmission fluid:

- Manual transmission Service and Repair
- Automatic transmission ATF Replacement

26. Remove exhaust pipe A.





27. A/T model: Remove the shift cable Service and Repair. Do not bend the shift cable excessively.

28. Remove the damper fork.

29. Separate the knuckles from the lower arms.

30. Remove the driveshafts Driveshaft Removal. Coat all precision-finished surfaces with new engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.

31. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch connector (A), then remove the A/C compressor (B) without disconnecting the A/C hoses. Do not bend the A/C hoses excessively.

NOTE: Hang the A/C compressor with a wire tie.





32. Lower the vehicle on the lift.

33. Remove the bolts securing the steering gearbox.






34. Disconnect the upper radiator hose (A) and the heater hoses (B).





35. Clean any dirt off the quick connector, the thermostat cover, and the lower radiator hose. Pull out the lock by hand, then wiggle the quick connector loose, and remove it from the thermostat cover. Do not use any tools to remove the quick connector.

36. Remove the ignition coil cover (A) and the brake booster vacuum line mounting bolts (B).






37. Attach the engine hanger adapter (VSB02C000015) to the threaded hole in the cylinder head.






38. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger adapter. Tighten the wing nut (A) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission.

NOTE:

- Be careful when working around the windshield.
- Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.





39. Disconnect the vacuum hose (A) and remove the front engine mount stop (B), then remove the front engine mount mounting bolt (C).






40. M/T model: Lift and support the engine/transmission with a jack and a wood block under the engine/transmission. Remove the rear engine mount mounting bolt (A), then remove the mount-to-subframe bolts (B).






41. A/T model: Lift and support the engine/transmission with a jack and a wood block under the engine/transmission. Remove the rear engine mount mounting bolt (A), then remove the mount-to-subframe bolts (B).





42. A/T model: Remove the rear engine mount upper bracket (C).

43. Raise the vehicle on the lift.

44. Remove the nuts securing the lower transmission mount.






45. Disconnect the ground cable connector at the front of the front subframe.






46. Remove the subframe middle mount on both sides.






47. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the belt (A) over the front of the front subframe (B), then secure the belt with its stop (C).





48. Raise the transmission jack and line up the slots in the front subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the transmission jack base, then securely attach them with four bolts.

49. Remove the front subframe mounting bolts (A), the four 12 x 1.25 mm bolts (B), (C), and the steering gearbox washers (D) securing four stiffeners (E), then lower the front subframe (F).





50. Lower the vehicle on the lift.

51. Remove the ground cable (A).





52. Remove the side engine mount bracket (B).

53. Install the universal lifting eyelet (07AAK-SNAA120) with a 15 mm spacer (A).






54. Attach a chain hoist (A) to the universal lifting eyelet (B) and the transmission hanger (C), then lift the engine/ transmission until it is securely supported by the chain hoist, and remove the engine support hanger and the engine hanger adapter.






55. Remove the upper transmission mount bracket mounting bolts (A).

NOTE: Do not remove the TORX bolt (B) from the upper transmission mount. If the TORX bolt is removed, the upper transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.

M/T model





A/T model





56. Remove the ground cable (C).

57. Check that the engine/transmission is completely free of the vacuum hoses, the fuel hoses, the coolant hoses, and the electrical wiring.

58. Slowly lower the engine/transmission about 150 mm (5.91 in). Check once again that all the hoses and the electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the engine/transmission, then lower it all the way and support it.

59. Disconnect the chain hoist from the engine/transmission.

60. Raise the vehicle, and remove the engine/transmission from under the vehicle.
