Engine Removal

Special Tools Required

- Hood Prop Bar 07AAZ-SZNA100
- Engine Hanger Adapter Set VSB02C000031
- Engine Hanger Balance Bar VSB02C000019
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016

NOTE:

- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- To avoid damaging the wiring and terminals, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
- Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.

1. Remove the passenger's side front fender trim .

2. Pry the hood support strut clip, and release the hood support strut, then move the hood to a vertical position and install the hood prop bar (07AAZ-SZNA100) as shown.





3. Relieve the fuel pressure Service and Repair.

4. Drain the power steering fluid Testing and Inspection.

5. Remove the bulkhead cover Front Bulkhead Cover Replacement.

6. Do the battery removal procedure.

7. Remove the engine cover.





8. Remove the air cleaner Service and Repair.

9. Remove the battery heat shield (A), then remove the auxiliary under-hood fuse/relay box (B) and the harness clamps (C).






10. Remove the harness clamp (A) and the bolts (B) and loosen the bolts (C), then remove the battery base (D).






11. Disconnect the positive starter cable (A) and the connector (B), then remove the harness clamps (C).





12. Remove the shift cable Service and Repair. Do not bend the shift cable excessively.

13. Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose (B) Fuel Line/Quick-Connect Fitting Removal.






14. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum hose (A), the EVAP canister hose (B), and the breather hose (C).





15. Disconnect the EVAP canister purge valve connector (D).

16. Remove the steering joint cover (A).





17. Make a reference mark (B) across the steering joint (C) and the steering gearbox pinion shaft (D). Loosen the steering joint bolt (E) and the steering joint bolt (F). Then install the steering wheel holder tool.

18. Remove the steering joint bolt, then disconnect the steering joint from the steering gearbox pinion shaft.

19. Disconnect the positive alternator cable (A) from the under-hood fuse/relay box and remove the harness clamps (B).






20. Remove the bracket (A), then remove the PCM cover (B).






21. Remove the harness clamps (A) and disconnect the PCM connectors (B) and the engine wire harness connector (C), then remove the PCM (D).






22. Remove the A/C receiver line clamp (A) and the connector (B) from the PCM bracket (C), then remove the PCM bracket and the harness bracket (D).





23. Remove the drive belt Service and Repair.

24. Disconnect the power steering pump inlet hose (A) and the power steering pump outlet hose (B) from the power steering pump, then plug the power steering hoses and the power steering pump.





25. Remove the power steering hose bracket (C) from the rear cylinder head cover.

26. Wait until the engine is cool, then carefully remove the radiator cap.

27. Raise the vehicle on the lift.

28. Remove the front wheels.

29. Remove the splash shield Front Splash Shield Replacement and the engine undercover Engine Undercover Replacement.

30. Loosen the drain plug in the radiator, and drain the engine coolant Service and Repair.

31. Drain the engine oil Service and Repair.

32. Drain the automatic transmission fluid ATF Replacement.

33. Remove the front subframe stiffener.






34. Remove exhaust pipe A.





35. Separate the stabilizer links from the dampers Front Stabilizer Link Removal/Installation.

36. Separate the tie-rod end ball joints from the knuckles.

37. Separate the knuckles from the suspension lower arms.

38. Remove the driveshafts Front Driveshaft Removal. Coat all precision-finished surfaces with new engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.

39. Remove the propeller shaft from the transfer shaft flange Propeller Shaft Removal.

40. Remove the transfer assembly Transfer Assembly Removal.

41. Disconnect the power steering hose (A), then plug the line and the hose.






42. Disconnect the PSP switch connector (A).






43. With ECPS: Disconnect the ECPS valve motor connector (A).






44. Remove the lower transmission mount mounting bolts (A) and the ground cable (B).






45. Remove the power steering line bracket (A), then remove the rear engine mount base mounting bolts (B).





46. Lower the vehicle on the lift.

47. Remove the radiator Radiator Replacement.

48. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch connector (A), then remove the A/C compressor (B) without disconnecting the A/C hoses. Do not bend the A/C hoses excessively.






49. Disconnect the heater hoses (A).






50. Remove the connector bracket (A) from the front cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole to attach the engine hanger balance bar front arm.






51. Remove the engine mount control solenoid valve bracket (A) from the rear cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole to attach the engine hanger balance bar rear arm.






52. Remove the service caps (A) for the front damper flange nuts from the cowl cover (B). Position the engine hanger adapter set (VSB02C000031) with the "FRONT" mark facing forward over the damper flange nuts.






53. Install the engine hanger balance bar (VSB02C000019). Attach the front arm (A) to the front cylinder head with several spacers (B) and a 10 x 1.25 mm bolt (C), attach the rear arm (D) to the rear cylinder head with a spacer (E) and an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt (F).





54. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger balance bar. Tighten the wing nut (G) by hand, and lift and support the engine/transmission.

NOTE:

- Be careful when working around the windshield.
- Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.
- AAR-T1256 two sets required for stacking additional cross section bar.

55. Disconnect the front engine mount control solenoid valve hose (A) and remove the front engine mount stop (B), then remove the front engine mount bolt (C).





56. Raise the vehicle on the lift.

57. With active damper system: Disconnect the front suspension stroke sensor connectors (A) and remove the harness clamps (B) on both sides.






58. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the belt (A) over the front of the front subframe (B), then secure the belt with its stop (C).





59. Raise the jack and line up the slots in the subframe adapter arms with the bolt holes on the jack base, then securely attach them with four bolts.

60. Remove the six 12 x 1.25 mm bolts (A) securing the subframe stiffeners (B), the four subframe mounting bolts (C), and the stiffeners, then lower the front subframe (D).





61. Lower the vehicle on the lift.

62. Attach a chain hoist (A) to the engine hanger (B) and the transmission hanger (C), then lift the engine/transmission until it's securely supported by the chain hoist and remove the engine support hanger, the engine hanger balance bar, and the engine hanger adapter set.






63. Remove the mounting bolts from the upper half of the side engine mount bracket.






64. Check that the engine/transmission is completely free of the vacuum hoses, the fuel hoses, the coolant hoses, and the electrical wiring.

65. Slowly lower the engine/transmission about 150 mm (5.91 in). Check once again that all the hoses and the electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the engine/transmission, then lower it all the way and support it.

66. Disconnect the chain hoist from the engine/transmission.

67. Raise the vehicle, and remove the engine/transmission from under the vehicle.
