DTC Troubleshooting: B1170

DTC B1170:

Gauge Control Module Lost Communication With VSA/ABS Modulator-Control Unit (VSA/ABS Message)

NOTE: If you are troubleshooting multiple DTCs, be sure to follow the instructions in B-CAN System Diagnosis Test Mode A Troubleshooting - B-CAN System Diagnosis Test Mode A.

1. Clear the DTCs with the HDS.

2. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and then back to ON (II).

3. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC B1170 indicated?

YES -

Go to step 4.

NO -

Intermittent failure, the F-CAN communication line is OK at this time. Check for loose or poor connections. If the connections are good, check the battery condition Battery Test and the charging system Alternator and Regulator Circuit Troubleshooting.

4. Check for VSA System DTCs with the HDS.

Are any DTCs indicated?

YES -

Go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting.

NO -

Go to step 5.

5. Do the gauge control module input test Component Tests and General Diagnostics.

Are all inputs OK?

YES -

Go to step 6.

NO -

Repair the faulty input, then recheck for DTCs.

6. Substitute a known-good gauge control module.

7. Clear the DTCs with the HDS.

8. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and then back to ON (II).

9. Check for the DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC B1170 indicated?

YES -

Update the VSA modulator-control unit if it does not have the latest software Testing and Inspection, or substitute a known-good VSA modulator-control unit Service and Repair, and recheck. If DTC B1170 is not indicated after update, the troubleshooting is complete. If DTC B1170 is not indicated after substitution, replace the original VSA modulator-control unit Service and Repair.

NO -

The original gauge control module is faulty; replace it Service and Repair.
