VSA DTC Troubleshooting: 27-12, 27-13

DTC 27-12:

Steering Angle Sensor Stuck

DTC 27-13:

Steering Angle Sensor Output Signal Malfunction

NOTE:

- Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the general troubleshooting information Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
- DTC 27-13 may set if the vehicle is driven on a lift (wheels are turning) and the steering wheel is turned significantly. This is normal, ignore it.

1. Slowly drive the vehicle straight without operating the steering wheel for 10 ft (3 m) or more, then park the vehicle on a level surface, and put the front wheels in the straight ahead position.

2. Check the STEERING ANGLE in the VSA DATA LIST with the HDS.

With the steering wheel in the straight ahead position, is the STEERING ANGLE within 0±5 °?

YES -

Go to step 3.

NO -

Check the installation of the steering angle sensor Service and Repair. If installation is OK, do the VSA sensor neutral position memorization Programming and Relearning.

3. Check the STEERING ANGLE in the VSA DATA LIST with the HDS.

When the steering wheels is turned slowly, does the value change?

YES -

Go to step 4.

NO -

Replace the steering angle sensor Service and Repair.

4. Set the front wheels to the straight ahead position

5. Turn the steering wheel one turn to the right. Check the STEERING ANGLE in the VSA DATA LIST with the HDS.

Is there about +324 degrees to +396 degrees?

YES -

Go to step 6.

NO -

Replace the steering angle sensor Service and Repair.

6. Set the front wheels to the straight ahead position

7. Turn the steering wheel one turn to the left. Check the STEERING ANGLE in the VSA DATA LIST with the HDS.

Is there about -324 degrees to -396 degrees?

YES -

Go to step 8.

NO -

Replace the steering angle sensor Service and Repair.

8. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

9. Clear the DTC with the HDS.

10. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

11. Test-drive the vehicle at 9 mph (15 km/h) or more.

NOTE: Drive the vehicle on the road, not on a lift.

12. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC 27-12 or 27-13 indicated?

YES -

Replace the steering angle sensor Service and Repair.

NO -

Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Refer to intermittent failures troubleshooting.
