DTC Troubleshooting: B1388

DTC B1388:

Power Tailgate Motor Circuit Malfunction

NOTE: If you are troubleshooting multiple DTCs, be sure to follow the instructions in B-CAN System Diagnosis Test Mode A Troubleshooting - B-CAN System Diagnosis Test Mode A.

1. Open the tailgate with the tailgate outer handle.

2. Close the tailgate automatically with the inside tailgate switch.

NOTE: If the tailgate does not close, wait for about 5 seconds, then try it again. If after five attempts the tailgate still does not close, go to step 3.

3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and then back to ON (II).

4. Clear the DTCs with the HDS.

5. Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC B1388 indicated?

YES -

Go to step 6.

NO -

Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Check for loose or poor connections between the power tailgate control unit and the drive unit.

6. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

7. Check the No. 2-4 (PTG MTR) (40 A) fuse, No. 7 (PTG CLOSER) (20 A) fuse, and No. 15 (10 A) fuse in the under-hood fuse/relay box.

Are the fuses OK?

YES -

Go to step 8.

NO -

Replace the fuse(s). If the fuse(s) blows again, repair a short to ground on the No. 2-4(PTG MTR)(40 A),No. 7(20 A), and/or No. 15(10 A) fuse circuit.

8. Disconnect power tailgate control unit connectors A (5P) and B (20P).

9. Measure the voltage between body ground and power tailgate control unit connector A (5P) terminal No. 2, and between body ground and connector B (20P) terminals No. 11 and No. 12 individually.









Is there battery voltage?

YES -

Go to step 10.

NO -

Repair an open or high resistance in the wire(s).

10. Check for continuity between body ground and power tailgate control unit connector A (5P) terminal No. 1.





Is there continuity?

YES -

Go to step 11.

NO -

Repair an open or high resistance in the wire or poor ground (G901).

11. Disconnect power tailgate drive unit connector A (2P).

12. Check for continuity between body ground and power tailgate control unit connector A (5P) terminals No. 3 and No. 5 individually.





Is there continuity?

YES -

Repair a short to ground in the wire(s).

NO -

Go to step 13.

13. Check for continuity between power tailgate control unit connector A (5P) terminals No. 3 and No. 5 and power tailgate drive unit connector A (2P) terminals No. 1 and No. 2 respectively.





Is there continuity?

YES -

Go to step 14.

NO -

Repair an open or high resistance in the wire(s).

14. Connect battery power to power tailgate control unit connector A (5P) terminal No. 3 (or No. 5) and ground the terminal No. 5 (or No. 3).





15. Check the power tailgate motor operation.

Does the motor run normally?

YES -

Replace the power tailgate control unit Component Tests and General Diagnostics.

NO -

Replace the power tailgate drive unit Service and Repair.
