Headliner: Service and Repair




Headliner Removal/Installation

Special Tools Required

- KTC Trim Tool Set SOJATP2014

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations Locations and the precautions and procedures Service and Repair before doing repairs or service.

NOTE:

- Put on gloves to protect your hands.
- Take care not to bend or scratch the headliner, the dashboard, or the other interior trim.
- Use the appropriate tool from the KTC trim tool set to avoid damage when removing components.

1. Slide both front seats all the way back, and recline the seat-back fully.

2. Do the battery terminal disconnection procedure, then wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.

3. Remove these items:

- Kick panel, driver's side Service and Repair
- Driver's dashboard lower cover Driver's Dashboard Lower Cover Removal / Installation
- Driver's dashboard undercover Driver's Dashboard Undercover Removal / Installation
- Driver's dashboard side panel
- A-pillar trims, both sides
- B-pillar upper/lower trims, both sides
- C-pillar trims, both sides
- Ceiling light Service and Repair
- Sunvisors and holders, both sides Service and Repair
- Grab handles, four places Service and Repair
- Center console Center Console Removal / Installation
- Center holder Dashboard Center Holder Removal / Installation
- Center pocket Dashboard Center Pocket Removal / Installation
- Climate control unit Climate Control Unit Removal/Installation
- Side pockets, both sides Dashboard Side Pocket Removal / Installation
- Parking brake lever Service and Repair

4. A/T: Remove the shift lever mounting bolts, then lower the lever.

5. Remove the center pocket frame.

6. Remove the roof console (A).

1. Remove the lenses (B).

2. Remove the screws (C), then pull out the front individual map light (D).

3. Disconnect the front individual map light connector (E), the moonroof switch connector (F), the HomeLink unit connector (G), and the HFL microphone connector or the HFL-navigation microphone connector (H).

4. Remove the screws (I). Pull down the front side of the console, and release the rear hooks (J).





7. Remove the rearview mirror harness cover. Disconnect the connector from the rearview mirror, and release the wire harness from the rearview mirror harness cover base Rearview Mirror Replacement.

8. If necessary, pinch the hooks (A) and remove the roof console screw grommets (B).





9. If necessary, release the hooks (C) by prying out the map light clips (D), then remove the clips.

10. Remove the roof wire harness (A) by detaching the harness clips (B) from the driver's side A-pillar, and release the lowest clip (C) with a tube holder from the front moonroof drain tube (D).






11. Remove the antenna lead (A) by detaching the harness clips (B) from the passenger's side A-pillar, and disconnect the antenna lead connector (C).






12. From under the driver's dash, remove the bolt, and release the hook (A), then move the driver's under-dash fuse/relay box (B).






13. From under the driver's dash, disconnect the roof wire harness connectors (A), and detach the harness clip (B).






14. From outside of the driver's dash, carefully pry up on the roof wire harness holder (A) with a long-handled clip remover from the stud-bolt, then pull out the roof wire harness (B) from inside the dashboard.






15. From the right C-pillar area, disconnect the antenna lead connector (A) from the AM/FM antenna amplifier (B), and detach the harness clips (C).






16. From the roof console opening, disconnect the moonroof subharness connector (A), and detach the harness clip (B).






17. With the help of an assistant, lower the headliner (A).

1. Remove the front door opening seals (B) and the rear door opening seals (C) from each roof area.

2. Detach the rear clips (D) by pulling down the rear area of the headliner.

3. Detach the front clips (E) and the Velcro fasteners (F) by lowering the moonroof opening edge of the headliner.





18. With the help of an assistant, remove the headliner (A) from the vehicle.

1. Move the headliner rearward.

2. Lower the front of the headliner below the steering wheel.

3. Rotate the headliner to point the front corner outside of the passenger's front door opening and the rear corner outside of the driver's front door opening.

4. Pull the headliner along with the roof wire harness (B) and the antenna lead (C) out through the passenger's front door.

NOTE: Do not bend the headliner. Bending the headliner will crease and damage it.





19. If necessary, remove the cushion tape fastening the roof wire harness (A) and the antenna lead (B) to the headliner (C), then remove them from the headliner.






20. If necessary, remove the front grab handle bracket (A) and the rear grab handle bracket (B).

1. Remove the bolts (C, D, E).

2. Carefully pry up a gap between the front tab plate (F) and the bracket with a flat-tip screwdriver to detach the joint (G).

3. Repeat the preceding step at the rear tab plate (H) area to detach the plate from the bracket.

4. Detach the clips (I).

NOTE:

- The grab handle bracket is attached to the tab plates of the side curtain airbag. Prying up the tab plates makes it possible to remove the bracket.
- Take care not to damage the side curtain airbag.

21. Install the headliner in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:

- If the side curtain airbag has deployed, replace the headliner and the removed trim pieces, along with the other parts listed for side curtain airbag deployment Service and Repair.
- To prevent the side curtain airbags from deploying improperly and possibly causing injury, inspect the headliner and all removed trim. Replace any pieces with the following damage:
- Any creases or tears in the headliner (A)
- Any cracks or breakage in the grab handle (B)
- Any damages around the grab handle holes (C) or the sunvisor holes (D) in the headliner
- Any cracks in the sunvisor stay base (E)
- Any cracks in the sunvisor bracket cover (F)
- Any bends or cracks in the sunvisor stay shaft (G)
- Any cracks in the sunvisor base (H)
- Any cracks or breakage in the vanity mirror base (I)
- Any fastener bases (J), the Velcro fasteners (K), or the clip bases (L) which have come off the headliner

- Replace the grab handle bracket mounting 6 mm bolt with a new one if it was removed.
- When installing a new grab handle bracket, tighten it and tab plates together with their mounting bolts securely.
- Install the grab handle by pushing on the handle against the bracket (M) until the clips (N) snap into place securely.
- If the clips are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
- Replace the removed cushion tapes with new pieces.

- Be careful not to crease or damage the headliner when reinstalling it through the front passenger's door opening. Also, be careful not to scratch the body.
- Check that both sides of the headliner are securely attached to the body.
- Make sure the headliner overlaps the trim pieces correctly.
- If the map light clips are removed, replace them with new ones.
- If the roof console screw grommets are removed or if they are damaged or stress-whitened, replace them with new ones.
- Push the clips and the hooks into place securely.
- Reinstall the roof console (O) as the following procedures:
- Install the roof console screw grommets (P) on the console with the screws (Q).
- Connect the HomeLink unit connector (R) and the HFL microphone connector or the HFL-navigation microphone connector (S).
- Set the rear hooks (T), and fit the grommets into the holes in the body, then push on the console until the grommets snap into place securely.

- Do the battery terminal reconnection procedure.
- Check for any DTCs that may have been set during repairs, and clear them.
