Automatic Transmission Removal

Special Tools Required

- Engine Hanger Adapter VSB02C000015
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016
*: Available through the Acura Tool and Equipment Program 888-424-6857.

NOTE:

- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- Special tool Reds engine support hanger AAR-T1256 must be used with the side engine mount installed.

1. Secure the hood in the wide open position (support rod in the lower hole).

2. Do the battery removal procedure Removal and Replacement.

3. Remove the front grille cover Front Grille Replacement.

4. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose (A) from its clamps (B), then remove the strut brace (C).





5. Remove the intake air duct.

6. Remove the air cleaner Service and Repair.

7. Disconnect PCM connectors A, B, and C, then remove the PCM Service and Repair.

8. Remove the battery base.

9. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is securely supported.

10. Remove the front wheels.

11. Remove the front splash shield Front Splash Shield Replacement.

12. Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the ATF.





13. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).

14. Disconnect these connectors:

- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (A)
- Transmission fluid pressure switch A (2nd clutch) connector (B)





15. Remove the harness clamps (C) from the clamp brackets (D).

16. Disconnect the ATF warmer hoses (A) from the ATF inlet line (B) and the ATF warmer (C). Turn the ends of the hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the hoses and the lines.






17. Disconnect the ATF warmer hose (A) from the ATF filter (B). Turn the end of the hose up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the hose and the line.






18. Remove the A/F sensor connector (A) from the connector bracket (B).





19. Remove the harness cover clamps (C), then remove the harness cover bracket (D).

20. Remove the bolts (A) securing the ATF warmer bracket (B), then move the ATF warmer/filter assembly out of the way.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the pipes and fin part of the ATF warmer when moving it.






21. Remove the transmission range switch subharness connector (A) from the connector bracket (B), then disconnect it.





22. Disconnect the input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (C) and the output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (D).

23. Disconnect these connectors:

- Transmission fluid pressure switch B (3rd clutch) connector (A)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (B)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector (C)
- Shift solenoid wire harness connector (D)





24. Remove the harness clamps (E) from the clamp brackets (F).

25. Remove the ignition coil cover.






26. Remove the harness cover bracket bolts (A).





27. Attach the engine hanger adapter (VSB02C000015) to the threaded hole located on the rear side of the cylinder head.

28. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook (A) to the slotted hole in the engine hanger adapter. Tighten the wing nut (B) by hand, and lift and support the engine.

NOTE:

- Be careful when working around the windshield.
- Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.





29. Disconnect the vacuum hose (A) from the vacuum line (B), and remove the vacuum hose from the clamp (C).





30. Remove the front engine mount stop (D) and the vacuum hose clamp bracket (E), then remove the front engine mount bolt (F).

31. Remove the upper transmission mount bracket bolts (A).

NOTE: Do not remove the TORX bolt (B) from the upper transmission mount. If the TORX bolt is removed, the upper transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.






32. Remove the rear engine mount bolts (A).






33. Remove the rear engine mount upper bracket (A) with the rear engine mount (B).






34. Remove the steering gearbox mounting bolts (A) and the washers (B) (8).

Driver's side





Passenger's side





35. Remove the bolts (B) and the self-locking nuts (C).





36. Remove exhaust pipe A and the gaskets (D).

37. Remove the damper fork mounting nuts (A) while holding the mounting bolts (B), then remove the damper fork mounting bolts.





38. Remove the cotter pins (C), then remove the castle nuts (D).

39. Separate the knuckle ball joints (E) from the lower arms (F) Ball Joint Removal.

40. Remove the torque converter cover (A), and remove the eight bolts (B) while rotating the crankshaft pulley.






41. Remove the shift cable cover (A).





42. Remove the spring clip (B) and the control pin (C), then separate the shift cable end (D) from the selector control lever (E). Remove the two bolts securing the shift cable bracket (F).

43. Support the shift cable to the body with nylon strap.

NOTE: Do not bend the shift cable excessively.

44. Disconnect the EPS ground subharness connector at the front of the front subframe.






45. Remove the lower transmission mount nuts.






46. Loosen the front subframe middle mounting rubber bolts (A).





47. Support the steering gearbox on both sides with nylon straps.

48. Attach the subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), and tighten the wing nut (C).





49. Raise a transmission jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the transmission jack base, then tighten the bolts.

50. Remove the four bolts (A) securing the stiffeners and the four bolts (B) securing the front subframe, then lower the front subframe.

NOTE: Check that the front subframe is free of the hoses and the electrical wiring.





51. Place the transmission jack under the transmission.

52. Remove the lower transmission mount.






53. Remove the left driveshaft from the differential and the right driveshaft from the intermediate shaft. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the driveshaft ends. Support the driveshafts on both sides with nylon straps.






54. Remove the intermediate shaft. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the intermediate shaft ends.






55. Remove the rear engine mount bracket.






56. Remove the front engine mount bracket.





57. Remove the transmission jack.

58. Remove the upper transmission housing mounting bolts.





59. Lower the transmission by loosening the wing nut on the engine support hanger, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission to clear the side frame. Check that the transmission is completely free of the vacuum hoses, the ATF warmer hoses, and the electrical wiring.

60. Place the transmission jack under the transmission.

61. Remove the front and lower transmission housing mounting bolts.






62. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor cover.






63. Remove the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the CKP sensor and the sensor harness.





64. Check once again that the transmission is free of the vacuum hoses, the ATF warmer hoses, and the electrical wiring.

65. Slide the transmission away from the engine to remove it from the vehicle.

66. Remove the torque converter (A), the O-ring (B), and the dowel pins (C).





67. Inspect the drive plate, and replace it if it is damaged Service and Repair.
