Automatic Transmission Removal
Special Tools Required
- Engine Support Hanger, A and Reds AAR-T1256
- Engine Hanger Balance Bar VSB02C000019
- Subframe Adapter VSB02C000016

NOTE:
- Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
- Special tool Reds engine support hanger AAR-T1256 must be used with the side engine mount installed.
1. Disconnect the support strut from both sides of the hood. Raise and secure the hood in a vertical position, then reattach the driver's side support strut into the lower threaded hole.
NOTE: Do not attempt to close the hood with the support strut in the vertical position; it will damage the support strut and the hood.
2. Remove the engine compartment covers Service and Repair.
3. Do the battery removal procedure Removal and Replacement.
4. Remove the air cleaner housing Service and Repair.
5. Remove the bolts securing the PCM bracket, then disconnect PCM connectors A, B, and C.
6. Remove the harness clamp (A) from the battery base (B), then remove the bolts (C), and loosen the bolts (D). Remove the battery base.
7. Raise the vehicle on a lift, and make sure it is supported securely.
8. Remove the front wheels.
9. Remove the front splash shield Front Splash Shield Replacement.
10. Remove the drain plug (A), and drain the automatic transmission fluid (ATF).
11. Reinstall the drain plug with a new sealing washer (B).
12. Remove the nuts (A) securing the strut brace (B).
13. Remove the vacuum hose (C), then remove the strut brace.
14. Remove the lower radiator hose (A) from its bracket (B).
15. Remove the harness clamp (C) from the harness clamp bracket (D).
16. Remove the positive starter cable (E) and the S terminal connector (F) from the starter.
17. Remove the transmission ground cable (G).
18. Remove the vacuum line (H) from it bracket (I), then remove the bolt securing the lower radiator hose bracket (J).
19. Remove the ATF dipstick (K).
20. Remove the starter (A) with the harness clamp bracket (B) and the gasket (C) from the transmission.
21. Insert the dipstick back into the dipstick guide tube.
22. Remove the spring clip (A) and the control pin (B), then separate the shift cable end (C) from the selector control lever (D).
23. Remove the nuts securing the shift cable bracket (E).
24. Check the bushing (F) in the shift cable end for proper fit and wear. If the bushing is loose or worn, replace the shift cable Service and Repair.
25. Disconnect these connectors:
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve A connector (A)
- A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve B connector (B)
- 4th clutch transmission fluid pressure switch connector (C)
- Shift solenoid wire harness connector (D)
26. Remove the bolt securing the harness cover (E), and remove the harness cover from its bracket (F).
27. Disconnect these connectors:
- Transmission range switch connector (A)
- Input shaft (mainshaft) speed sensor connector (B)
28. Remove the harness clamp (A) from its bracket.
29. Disconnect these connectors:
- Output shaft (countershaft) speed sensor connector (B)
- Transmission fluid pressure switch B (3rd clutch) connector (C)
- ATF temperature sensor connector (D)
30. Remove the harness clamp (A) from its bracket (B), and remove the harness clamp bracket.
31. Disconnect the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valve C connector (C).
32. Remove the harness cover mounting bolt (D), and remove the harness cover (E) from its bracket (F).
33. Disconnect the EPS motor angle sensor 6P connector (A).
34. Disconnect the EPS motor 3P connector (B) by pushing the lock (C) and pulling down the lever (D). Wrap the connectors with vinyl tape to avoid contamination from grease or water.
35. Disconnect the EPS subharness 6P connector (A). Wrap the connectors with vinyl tape to avoid contamination from grease or water.
36. Remove the steering wheel Steering Wheel Removal.
37. Remove these items:
- Steering joint cover.
- Steering joint.
- Center guide (if equipped).
38. Remove the bolt securing the harness clamp bracket.
39. Disconnect the transmission fluid pressure switch A (2nd clutch) connector.
40. Disconnect the ATF cooler hoses (A) from the ATF cooler lines (B). Turn the ends of the cooler hoses up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the cooler hoses and lines.
41. Check for any signs of leakage at the hose joints.
42. Remove the bolt (A) securing the connector bracket (B) from the front cylinder head; use the bracket bolt hole (C) to attach the engine hanger balance bar front arm.
43. Remove the bolt (A) securing the engine mount control solenoid valve bracket (B) and the harness clamp bracket (C); use the bracket bolt hole (D) to attach the engine hanger balance bar rear arm.
44. Install the engine hanger balance bar (VSB02C000019). Attach the front arm (A) to the front cylinder head with a spacer (B) and a 10 x 1.25 mm bolt (C). Attach the rear arm (D) to the rear cylinder head with a spacer (E) and an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt (F).
45. Install the engine support hanger (AAR-T1256) onto the vehicle as shown, and attach the hook to the slotted hole in the engine hanger balance bar. Tighten the wing nut (G) by hand, and lift and support the engine.
NOTE:
- Be careful when working around the windshield.
- Be careful not to damage the hood opener cable when installing the engine support hanger at the front bulkhead.
- The engine support hanger two sets required for stacking additional cross section bar.
46. Disconnect the vacuum hose (A) from the vacuum line (B).
47. Remove the front engine mount stop (C) and the clamp bracket (D), then remove the front engine mount bolt (E).
48. Remove the rear engine mount stop (A), then remove the rear engine mount bolt (B).
49. Disconnect the vacuum hoses (A) from the joint.
50. Remove the self-locking nuts (B) Service and Repair.
51. Remove exhaust pipe A and the gaskets (C).
52. Remove the cotter pins (A) from the knuckle ball joint, then remove the castle nuts (B).
53. Remove the cotter pins (C) from the tie-rod end ball joint (D), then remove the nuts (E).
54. Remove the damper fork mounting nuts (A) while holding the mounting bolts (B), then remove the mounting bolts.
55. Separate the knuckle ball joints (C) from the lower arms (D).
56. Separate the tie-rod end ball joints (F) from the knuckles (G).
57. Disconnect the ATF cooler hose (A) from the ATF cooler line (B). Turn the end of the cooler hose up to prevent ATF from flowing out, then plug the hose and the cooler line.
58. Remove the torque converter cover (A), and remove the eight bolts (B) while rotating the crankshaft pulley.
59. Remove the lower transmission mount nuts.
60. Remove the front subframe middle rubber mount bolts on both sides.
61. Disconnect the EPS ground subharness connector at the front of the front subframe.
62. Attach the front subframe adapter (VSB02C000016) to the front subframe by looping the strap (A) over the front of the front subframe, then secure the strap with the stop (B), then tighten the wing nut (C).
63. Raise a transmission jack and line up the slots in the arms with the bolt holes on the corner of the jack base, then tighten the bolts.
64. Remove the four bolts securing the stiffeners (A) and the four bolts securing the front subframe (B), then lower the front subframe.
NOTE: Check that the front subframe is free of the vacuum hoses, the ATF cooler hoses, and the electrical wiring.
65. Remove the lower transmission mount.
66. Remove the left side driveshaft from the differential and the right side driveshaft from the intermediate shaft. Coat all precision machined surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the driveshaft ends. Support the driveshafts on both sides with nylon straps.
NOTE: Plug the left side driveshaft hole to prevent dirt and solvent from entering the transmission.
67. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor cover (A), and disconnect the CKP sensor connector (B).
68. Remove the bolt securing the sensor harness clamp bracket (C).
69. Remove the rear warm up three way catalytic converter (WU-TWC) bracket (A), and remove the intermediate shaft (B).
NOTE: Plug the intermediate shaft hole (C) to prevent dirt and solvent from entering the transmission.
70. Coat all precision finished surfaces with clean engine oil, then put plastic bags over the intermediate shaft ends.
71. Remove the front engine mount bracket.
72. Place a jack under the transmission, raise it just enough to take it off of the mount, and remove the upper transmission mount and the mount bracket.
NOTE: Do not remove the TORX bolt (A) from the upper transmission mount. If the TORX bolt is removed, the upper transmission mount must be replaced as an assembly.
73. Remove the jack.
74. Remove the upper transmission housing mounting bolts.
75. Lower the transmission by loosening the wing nut on the engine support hanger, and tilt the engine just enough for the transmission to clear the side frame. Check that the transmission is completely free of the vacuum hoses, the ATF cooler hoses, and the electrical wiring.
76. Place the jack under the transmission.
77. Remove the front transmission housing mounting bolts.
78. Remove the rear transmission housing mounting bolts.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the CKP sensor.
79. Remove the lower transmission housing mounting bolts.
80. Check once again that the transmission is free of vacuum hoses, ATF coolant hoses, and electrical wiring.
81. Slide the transmission away from the engine to remove it from the vehicle.
82. Remove the torque converter (A), the O-ring (B), and the dowel pins (C).
83. Inspect the drive plate, and replace it if it is damaged Service and Repair.
84. Remove the clamp bracket from the transmission.
85. Remove the vacuum line (A) from the transmission.
