Steering Column Removal/Installation




Steering Column Removal and Installation

SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations Locations, and the precautions and procedures Service and Repair before doing repairs or service.

Removal

1. Tilt the steering column all the way down, and move it all the way out.

2. Do the battery terminal disconnection procedure.

3. Remove the driver's airbag, and the steering wheel Steering Wheel Removal.

4. Remove the driver's dashboard undercover Driver's Dashboard Undercover Removal / Installation.

5. Pull back the carpet (A).





6. Remove the steering joint cover (B).

7. Remove the steering joint bolts (A), then disconnect the steering joint (B) from the pinion shaft and the steering column shaft.

NOTE:

- If the center guide (C) is in place and has not moved, leave it in place.
- If the center guide has come off, discard it.





8. Remove the column covers Service and Repair, and disconnect the connector from the power tilt/telescopic steering switch (A).





9. Disconnect the wire harness connectors from the combination switch assembly/cable reel (B) and tilt/telescopic motors (C).

10. Remove the combination switch assembly/cable reel from the steering column shaft by removing the screws (D).

11. Disconnect the connectors from the ignition switch (without keyless access system) or electric steering lock (with keyless access system), and release the wire harness clips from the steering column.

12. Disconnect the connectors from the power tilt/telescopic steering control unit (E).

13. Remove the steering column (F) by removing the attaching bolts.

14. Remove the steering column lower cover bracket (G).

Installation

1. Install the steering column in the reverse order of removal, and note these items:

- Take care not to let the sliding plates (A) fall out of position during column installation.
- Make sure the wires are not caught or pinched by any parts.
- Make sure that there is no gap (B) between bracket (C), sliding plates, and absorbing plate (D) once column is mounted in place and fixing bolts are tightened.
- Tighten the screws (E) in the sequence shown.









2. Center the steering rack within its stroke.

3. Insert the upper end of the steering joint onto the steering shaft (A) (line up the bolt hole (B) with the flat portion (C) on the shaft), and loosely install the steering joint upper bolt (D).





4. Slip the lower end of the steering joint onto the pinion shaft.

NOTE:

- Pinion shaft with center guide: Install the steering joint by aligning the center guide (E).
- Pinion shaft without center guide: Position the steering column by aligning the gap (F) within the angle.

5. Align the bolt hole (A) on the steering joint with the groove (B) around the pinion shaft then loosely install the steering joint lower bolt (C).





6. Pull on the steering joint to make sure that the steering joint is fully seated, then tighten the steering joint lower bolt to the specified torque.

7. Tighten the steering joint upper bolt (D) to the specified torque.

8. Install the steering joint cover (A).





9. Set the carpet (B) in place.

10. Install the driver's dashboard undercover Driver's Dashboard Undercover Removal / Installation.

11. Install the steering wheel Steering Wheel Installation, and the driver's airbag.

12. Do the battery terminal reconnection procedure, and check these items:

- Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), or press the engine start/stop button to select the ON mode, and check that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds, and then goes off.
- Make sure the horn and turn signal switches work properly.
- Make sure the steering wheel switches work properly.

13. After installation, check these items:

- Check the steering wheel spoke angle. If the steering spoke angles to the right and left are not equal (steering wheel and rack are not centered), correct the engagement of the joint/pinion shaft splines.
- Set the steering column to the center tilt/telescopic position, then do the front toe inspection Service and Repair.
- Do the VSA sensor neutral position memorization Programming and Relearning.
