Fuel Filter: Description and Operation
FUEL FILTERS
Main Fuel Filter:
The fuel filter removes particles from the fuel that might clog the fuel distributor or injectors; it is located on the pressure side of the pump so that a possible clogged filter will not damage the pump by causing it to run "dry".
The nylon-paper element inside the filter housing is designed to work best with fuel flow in one direction: an arrow on the housing denotes the proper installation direction.
In-Tank Filter Screen:
Because the main fuel filter is after the fuel pump, a fine mesh screen is used at the fuel pick-up inside the fuel tank to protect the fuel pump. The screen can usually be reached for servicing after removing the fuel gauge sending unit.
Inline Filter:
On those models where access to an in-tank fuel screen would be difficult, a small in-line filter is used between the fuel tank and the fuel pump.
