Ignition Switch: Service and Repair

Ignition Switch And Lock Cylinder:






IGNITION SWITCH/STEERING LOCK ASSEMBLY REMOVAL

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. Remove steering column cover.

3. With 11/32" (8.5mm) drill bit, drill off collars of shear bolts, unplug ignition switch connector from switch and remove ignition switch/steering lock assembly from steering column.

LOCK CYLINDER REMOVAL

1. Once assembly is removed from steering column, drill a 1/8" (3mm) hole in the position shown in illustration (lock cylinder release hole, not drilled from the factory).

2. Depress spring loaded retainer by inserting a small punch through drilled hole and hold.

3. While holding retainer down, insert ignition key into lock cylinder, turn key slightly to the right and pull lock cylinder from steering lock housing.


IGNITION/STARTER SWITCH REMOVAL

1. Once assembly is removed from steering column, clean away sealing paint, remove mounting screw for ignition/starter switch pull switch from steering lock housing.

INSTALLATION - IGNITION/STARTER SWITCH

1. Align holes for mounting screw, insert switch into housing, secure with screw and cover screw with sealing paint.

INSTALLATION - LOCK CYLINDER

1. Position lock cylinder in housing as when removed and push in until spring loaded retainer snaps into place.

INSTALLATION - IGNITION SWITCH/STEERING LOCK ASSEMBLY

1. Connect ignition switch electrical connector and position assembly on steering column so that locating key fits into hole on bottom of steering column.

2. Install new shear bolts and tighten until the hex head breaks off.

3. Install steering column cover.
