System Controls

The Audi 5000 electronic climate control is fully automatic. The system automatically controls;
- Air distribution
- Fresh air fan speed
- Inside air temperature

The driver can operate the system by pushing certain buttons on the control head. The control head features a digital display for displaying the selected temperature or the outside air temperature.

The temperature can be displayed in either Centigrade or Fahrenheit by moving the C°/F° switch. The control head is illuminated by the instrument panel lighting rheostat. Small red LED's above each push button indicate which mode is selected.

The warmer and cooler push buttons are used to increase and decrease the temperature setting between 65°F and 85°F (18°C and 29°C). If the buttons are pushed when the temperature setting is at 65°F or 85°F the setting will jump to 60°F (15°C) or 90°F (32°C). These are maximum cooling and heating settings which will override the automatic temperature control.

MODE SELECTION

OFF
The system is shut-off.

ECON
Automatic temperature, air distribution and blower control with the A/C compressor turned off (no air conditioning).

LO
Automatic temperature and air distribution control with blower speed at a fixed low rate.

AUTO
Automatic temperature control, air distribution and variable blower speed.

HI
Automatic temperature and air distribution with blower speed at a fixed high rate.

DEFROST
Automatic temperature control with all air directed at the windshield and side defrost outlets. Blower speed is at a fixed high rate.

REAR DEFOGGER
By pushing the (defog) button current will be supplied to the heating elements in the rear window and both outside, rear view mirrors. After approximately ten minutes the LED indicator will go out and the heating elements turned off.

On cars produced after VIN 44EN 008473 the heating elements remain energized after the LED indicator goes out until the ignition is turned off.

OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE
By pushing the Outside TEMP button the temperature of the outside air will be displayed in place of the temperature setting. The system will continue to operate in the mode previously selected.

Blower Operation
In ECON or AUTO, the blower speed is variable depending on interior temperature. If there is a large difference between the temperature selected on the control head and the actual interior temperature the blower will run at high speed. As the interior temperature gets closer to the selected temperature the blower speed will decrease.

Air Distribution
In all modes except defrost the air distribution is also determined by the difference between interior temperature and the temperature selected on the control head.

Heating
When the selected temperature is higher than the interior temperature the majority of air is directed out of the footwells with a small amount also to the defrost outlets.

When interior temperature reaches the selected temperature air will also be discharged through the dash vents.

Cooling
When the selected temperature is lower than the interior temperature the air will be discharged through the dash vents. When the interior temperature reaches the selected temperature air will also be discharged from the footwell vents and defrost outlets.
