Fuel Pump Check
TEST CONDITIONS- battery must be fully charged (minimum 12 volts) and fuse OK
- fuel filter must be clean and installed in proper direction
- use adaptor VW 1348/3A
WORK SEQUENCE
- remove fuel pump relay from fuse panel (see arrow)
- VW 1348/3A switched OFF
- connect VW 1348/3A to fuse panel in place of fuel pump relay
- remove fuel pump cover from trunk compartment floor
- disconnect electrical plugs from fuel pump
- connect voltmeter between contact 1 and 2
- turn switch of VW 1348/3A ON
- must be at least 11.5 volts.
IF NO
- check wiring according to current flow diagram
- turn switch of VW 1348/3A OFF
- pull back rubber cover of fuel pump connecting plug
- connect voltmeter to connecting plug contact 1 and 2 (leave plug connected to fuel pump)
- turn switch of VW 1348/3A ON
- check voltage of running fuel pump should be at least 9.0 volts
If voltage OK but pump NOT RUNNING proceed as follows
- pull off supply line A, return line B and vent hose C
- loosen retaining sleeve and pull out fuel gauge sender (using tool 3087)
- check for break in wiring between fuel pump and gauge housing with ohmmeter should be "0" ohms
NOTE: If wire breaks have been eliminated, repeat test
