Ignition System: Description and Operation

Electronic Ignition With Hall Sending Unit

Since 1979, our vehicles use an electronic control unit, along with a device in the distributor called a Hall sending unit, which replace the mechanical points.

Electronic ignition systems which use the Hall sending unit are more efficient, produce higher voltages and are less expensive than the previous ignition systems. This chart is a comparison of a few specifications.

This eliminates the need for point replacement, and higher voltages are produced, which aid starting, reduce plug fouling, and provide better emission control.

Note:
Audi 5000S and Coupe GT are equipped with CIS-E III as a running change during 1987 model year. Information in this section does not apply to these vehicles.
