CAMBER, ADJUST




4000 Models Exc. Quattro

1. Loosen both ball joint mounting nuts on control arms.
2. Check that ball joint breaks loose from control arm. If not, bounce vehicle lightly, wheel will move to negative camber position.
3. Install tools US4490 and VW552, or equivalents.
4. Tighten tension nut on tool VW552 to adjust camber to specification.
5. Torque outboard ball joint mounting nut to 47 ft.lbs.
6. Recheck camber and correct as necessary, then remove tools.
7. Torque inboard ball joint mounting nut to 47 ft.lbs.




TOE, ADJUST




On 4 cylinder vehicles, toe is adjusted on one side only by turning tie rod. The following procedure must be used when adjusting 5 cylinder vehicles.
1. Turn steering gear to center position, then remove lower gear box cover plate attaching bolt.
2. Attach center tool 3075 or equivalent with bracket over mounting nut on left tie rod.
3. Remove bolt from spacer on chain of centering tool.
4. Insert bolt removed in step 3 through the hole marked with ``L'' on centering tool and tighten to steering gear.
5. Measure and divide total toe in half.
6. Loosen clamps and outer locknut on both tie rods.
7. Turn tie rods until toe is within specifications.
8. Tighten clamps and locknuts on tie rods, check and position steering wheel in center position as necessary, remove centering tool, and torque lower gear box cover plate attaching bolt to 14 ft.lbs.
