1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove cap from expansion tank, and disconnect hose from bottom of tank. Drain into a suitable container.
3. On air conditioned vehicles, put temperature lever in cold position. On models without air conditioning, open heater valve.
4. Disconnect hose and drain coolant. Disconnect all other hoses from radiator.
5. Remove control pressure regulator, cold start valve, and fuel injectors. Leave all fuel lines connected. Protect injectors and cold start valve with caps.
6. Disconnect air duct and vacuum hoses from throttle valve and remove air cleaner cover with filter.
7. Disconnect hood latch cable from guide bracket.
8. On air conditioned vehicles, remove grille and bolts securing condenser.
9. Remove upper radiator shroud, where equipped, disconnect wiring harness connectors from cooling fan and thermo switch, and remove radiator as an assembly with cooling fan.
10. Remove bolts securing power steering pump and pump, leaving hoses connected.
11. Remove vacuum amplifier, ignition coil and EGR control valve.
12. Remove windshield washer and power steering reservoirs from holders.
13. Remove distributor cap, wires and distributor rotor. Tape dust cover in place.
14. Disconnect throttle cable on manual transmission models, and remove throttle rod on automatic transmission models.
15. Disconnect wiring harness connectors at distributor, oil pressure sending unit, water temperature sending unit, and air conditioning compressor clutch.
16. Remove bolts securing air conditioning compressor and compressor, leaving hoses connected.
17. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold and front bracket.
18. Remove front engine mount.
19. Remove alternator, leaving wiring harness connected.
20. Disconnect wiring harness and battery cable connectors from starter, then remove starter motor.
21. On automatic transmission models, remove bolts securing torque converter to drive plate through starter motor hole.
22. Remove lower bolts securing engine to transmission.
23. Support transmission and remove upper bolts securing engine to transmission.
24. Attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
25. Remove left engine bracket and nut securing right bracket to engine mount.
26. Raise engine slightly until lower pulley is opposite grille opening.
27. Separate engine from transmission, raise engine, and turn to right while lifting.
28. Reverse procedure to install, note the following:
a. On vehicles with manual transmission, coat mainshaft splines with suitable lubricant.
b. Tighten engine mounts to subframe while engine is idling.
c. Ensure that metal lip on gasket between exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe faces exhaust pipe.
d. Torque bolts and/or nuts as follows: A/C compressor to engine, 29 ft.lbs., alternator to engine and bracket, 14 ft.lbs., cold start valve, 7 ft.lbs., control pressure regulator, 14 ft.lbs., crankshaft bolt, 253 ft.lbs., engine stop on body/block, 32 ft.lbs., engine mounts, 32 ft.lbs., engine to transmission bolts, M8 14 ft.lbs., M10 32 ft.lbs., and M12 43 ft.lbs., exhaust pipe to manifold, 22 ft.lbs., exhaust pipe support, 22 ft.lbs., power steering pump, 14 ft.lbs., starter, 14 ft.lbs., subframe to body, 51 ft.lbs., and drive belt pulley, 14 ft.lbs.
