Shift Linkage: Adjustments

SELECTOR LEVER, ADJUST

AUDI 5000

1. Place selector lever in P position.
2. Loosen clamping bolt, then pull transaxle lever to P position stop and tighten clamping bolt. Make sure cable does not twist and transaxle lever does not bend when clamping bolt is being tightened. The selector lever must not touch selector gate in P or 1 positions.
3. Operate engine at idle and move selector lever from P position to R and then N positions, pausing between selections. Engine speed change should be noticeable within one second after each position change. Clearance between selector and front gate in position ``P'' should be the same as the clearance between the selector and back of gate in 1 position.
4. Check neutral safety switch by attempting to start engine in each position. Engine should start in P and N positions only. If not, remove selector lever gate, loosen switch mounting screws and adjust neutral safety switch as necessary.

ACCELERATOR & KICKDOWN LINKAGE, ADJUST

AUDI 5000

1984-88 Exc. Models W/E-Mode Transaxle

Accelerator controls must be adjusted so that transaxle operating lever is at ``no throttle'' position with throttle closed. If adjustment is incorrect, shift speeds will be too high at part throttle and line pressure will be too high at idle.
1. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature, throttle is closed and accelerator is in idle position.
2. Disconnect push and pull rods and the cruise control linkage from connections at throttle body.
3. Hold pull rod lever against stop, then adjust length of pull rod so that it slips easily over ball stud.
4. Adjust pushrod so that transaxle lever is in ``no throttle'' position with injection pump lever against idle stop, then reconnect push and pull rods. Ensure pushrod can be installed easily, without tension.
5. Disconnect pushrod from transaxle lever, then have helper hold accelerator pedal against floor stop.
6. Loosen bolt securing cable to transaxle lever, hold transaxle lever against kickdown stop and pull cable through retainer to end of travel, then tighten cable retainer. Ensure cable holds lever against kickdown stop with accelerator pedal fully depressed.
7. Reconnect pushrod to transaxle lever.
8. Check adjustment as follows:
a. Hold throttle lever against idle stop. Transaxle lever should be in ``no throttle'' position.
b. Hold accelerator pedal in full throttle position without kickdown. Throttle lever should be against full throttle stop and kickdown spring must not be compressed.
c. Hold accelerator pedal against floor stop. Transaxle lever should be against kickdown stop and kickdown spring should be compressed 5/16 inch (8 mm).
d. When adjustment is correct, reconnect cruise control cable.

Models W/E-Mode Transaxle

Adjust controls so that injection pump lever is against idle stop and transaxle lever is at ``no throttle'' position. If adjustment is incorrect, part throttle upshifts will be delayed and transaxle will not be disconnected in E-Mode position. An incorrectly adjusted accelerator cable will cause main line pressure to be too high in closed throttle position.
1. Place selector lever in park and set parking brake. Run engine until it reaches normal operating temperature and ensure idle and maximum speeds are within specifications.
2. Remove injection pump cover, loosen screw securing cable clamp (screw closest to pump lever) and rotate clamp 1/4 turn to release cold start cable. Do not loosen setscrew at end of cable.
3. Disconnect cruise control linkage, set hand throttle to stop and disconnect pedal cable at transaxle lever.
4. Remove connecting lever at pump and disconnect pushrod from relay lever.
5. Adjust ball stud on pump lever so that travel between idle stop and full throttle stop is 1.617-1.697 inches (41.1-43.1 mm) by moving ball stud in pump lever slot.
6. Install connecting lever, adjusting connecting lever length so that locating hole in relay lever is aligned with bracket, Fig. 4.
7. Compress pushrod until a 1/8 inch diameter rod can be inserted through hole at base of rod end boot.
8. Adjust pushrod so that it can be installed easily when pump lever is against idle stop and transaxle lever is in ``no throttle'' position, then connect pushrod to relay lever.
9. Disconnect pushrod from transaxle lever and have helper hold accelerator pedal against floor stop.
10. Push transaxle lever against kickdown stop, pull pedal cable through retainer on lever to end of travel, then tighten retainer to secure cable to lever. Release cable and ensure cable holds lever against kickdown stop when accelerator pedal is fully depressed.
11. Connect pushrod to transaxle lever and remove rod from locating hole.
12. Check operation as follows:
a. Press pump lever against idle stop and ensure transaxle lever is in ``no throttle'' position.
b. Depress accelerator pedal to full throttle position without kickdown. Pump lever should be against full throttle stop, but kickdown spring should not be compressed.
c. Fully depress accelerator pedal against kickdown stop. Transaxle lever should be against kickdown stop and kickdown spring should be compressed.
d. When adjustment is correct, reconnect cruise control linkage, hand throttle and cold start cable.
