1987 5000S Quattro (CIS-E III)
Fuel system, chemical cleaning
^ engine MUST be at operating temperature
CAUTION
Always use new sealing washers on connections to eliminate the possibility of fluid leakage while performing the cleaning operation.
^ remove intake air boot
^ center punch and drill (tamper proof) CO plug, and remove
^ remove oil cooler air shroud
^ remove air filter housing lower mounting bolt
^ remove air filter housing air intake tube, air filter and cover
^ disconnect harness connectors from potentiometer and differential pressure regulator
^ pull air filter housing towards engine to expose fuel pressure regulator
^ remove fuel return line from fuel distributor and fuel pressure regulator
^ install cap nuts (from kit) onto open fitting on fuel distributor and fuel pressure regulator
^ reinstall air filter housing
^ reinstall air filter and cover
^ reconnect harness connectors to potentiometer and differential pressure regulator
^ disconnect fuel supply line at fuel distributor and set aside
^ attach aerosol can adaptor line with shutoff valve (from kit) to supply fitting on fuel distributor
The kit contains two adaptor lines. Choose the appropriate line depending on the type of fitting you are connecting to either banjo fitting or compression fitting.
The following steps should be performed smoothly WITHOUT pause. Any delay in starting after attaching the aerosol can could cause flooding and a no-start condition.
CAUTION
FLAMMABLE MATERIAL. Hold aerosol container upright, avoiding ALL electrical contact.
CORROSIVE MATERIAL. Do NOT allow to come in contact with painted surfaces or rubber hoses. Refer to label on container.
MAKE SURE all fuel lines are plugged or covered for safety purposes before starting vehicle.
WARNING
Safety glasses MUST be worn while performing this work sequence.
^ thread aerosol container into fitting on (supply side) adaptor line
WARNING
Hand tighten ONLY.
CAUTION
Install exhaust vent on tail pipe to vent toxic fumes.
^ IMMEDIATELY start engine and run at approximately 3000 RPM until aerosol container is empty (engine will stop running after approximately 5 minutes)
If hard starting occurs, lift the sensor plate via the CO adjustment screw, using CO adjustment wrench P377.
^ repeat operation with a second container of cleaner
^ reinstallation is the reverse of the removal procedure
^ check idle speed and CO content, adjust if necessary
^ install new (tamper proof) CO plug
