4 Speed 4000 & Coupe


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect electrical connectors for back-up lights and the cable strap adjacent to master cylinder.
3. Remove upper engine to transmission attaching bolts.
4. Disconnect speedometer cable.
5. Disconnect clutch cable at clutch lever.
6. Disconnect exhaust pipe at manifold.
7. Remove engine stop attaching bolts.
8. Disconnect front exhaust pipe at front muffler.
9. Remove driveshafts from transmission.
10. Remove transmission cover plate and the starter.
11. Remove bolt from shift rod coupling, pry off linkage coupling, and pull shift rod coupling off shift rod.
12. On early models, proceed as follows:
a. Loosen rear attaching bolt of right side transmission support.
b. Remove two front attaching bolts of right side transmission support.
c. Pivot transmission support toward rear of vehicle.
d. Remove attaching bolts of front bracket for right side transmission support.
13. On late models, proceed as follows:
a. Loosen rear attaching bolt of right side transmission support.
b. Remove front attaching bolt of right side transmission support.
c. Pivot transmission support toward rear of vehicle.
d. Remove attaching bolts of front bracket for right side transmission support.
14. Remove lower engine to transmission attaching bolts.
15. Pry transmission away from engine at front, then remove transmission.
16. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Ensure that all engine and transmission mounts are properly aligned and free of tension.
b. Adjust gearshift lever as necessary.
c. Coat mainshaft splines with suitable lubricant.
d. Ensure that intermediate shaft is properly seated.
e. Position transmission on dowel sleeves.
f. Secure bolt on shift rod coupling with wire.
g. Torque transmission cover plate attaching bolts and shift rod coupling bolts to 7 ft.lbs.
h. Torque starter attaching bolts to 14 ft.lbs.
i. Torque engine stop to block attaching bolts, front bracket to transmission attaching bolts, muffler to catalytic converter attaching bolts, rubber mount to bracket attaching bolts on late model vehicles, and rubber mounting on early model vehicles to 18 ft.lbs.
j. Torque exhaust pipe to manifold attaching bolts to 22 ft.lbs.
k. Torque rubber mount to body attaching bolts to 29 ft.lbs. on early model vehicles.
l. Torque driveshaft to flange attaching bolts to 33 ft.lbs.
m. Torque rubber mount to bracket attaching bolts on early model vehicles and transmission to engine attaching bolts to 40 ft.lbs.
n. Torque subframe support to body attaching bolts to 51 ft.lbs.
o. Torque rubber mount to body attaching bolts to 80 ft.lbs. on late model vehicles.
