Ignition Switch Lock Cylinder: Service and Repair

Steering lock/cylinder, removing/installing

Work sequence

- disconnect battery ground (-) cable
- pull off horn pad
- remove steering wheel




- loosen clamp for steering column switch
- disconnect electrical connectors
- pull off steering column switch




- remove instrument cluster (arrows)




- remove speedometer cable at transmission (arrow)
- pull instrument cluster forward
- remove speedometer cable at speedometer
- pull off electrical connectors from instruments and take out instrument cluster




- drill out shear bolt with 3.5 mm (1/8 in) bit (arrow)




- loosen both steering column bolts (arrows)
- remove left lower dash panel




- remove left air deflector
- slide steering column tube together with steering column downward
- remove steering lock out of steering column clamp




- drill with 3 mm (1/8 in.) bit into housing
a = 12.5 mm (1/2 in.)
b = 8.0 mm (5/16 in.)

CAUTION! Be careful when drilling. thickness of housing is approx. 1.5 mm (0.06 in.)




- push retaining spring inward with punch (arrow A)
- remove lock cylinder (arrow B)

Installing:




- push lock cylinder into housing until retaining spring engages (arrows)




- ensure that flange tube and steering column are mounted until stop is reached (arrows)
