Ignition MAP

Basic Ignition Timing Map:

Ignition System

A revised version of the 1984-85 my 5000 Turbo digital ignition system is used on the 5000 CS Turbo and 5000 CS quattro.

The basic ignition timing is determined by:
^ Engine speed
^ Engine load

An ignition map consisting of 256 points (16 engine load points and 16 engine speed points) is programmed into the control unit's memory. Depending on these 2 conditions, the ignition timing will normally be somewhere within the map area above.

The ignition timing will be advanced as engine speed increases. It will also be advanced as engine load decreases to increase fuel economy. However, as the engine load is increased, this amount of ignition advance is decreased to prevent detonation.

The benefit of this system is that the ignition timing will always be at the most optimum point for all engine operating conditions.
