Climate Control

Engine oil, drawn into the A/C programmer via vacuum supply, could cause the programmer to malfunction.

The most common symptom of (programmer) oil contamination is the climate control system operating in the defrost mode ONLY (fail safe).

If oil contamination has caused the programmer to fail you will have to replace it.

The following procedure will prevent oil from entering the new programmer.

Oil contamination, checking

^ remove nut and disconnect vacuum hose/ connector assembly 4
^ inspect inside surfaces of connector for presence of oil (arrow)

If oil is present, ^ replace vacuum hose/connector assembly 4
^ Part No. 443 820 663 A (up to VIN 44F 200 000) or
^ Part No. 443 820 663 C (from VIN 44F 200 001)

^ replace climate control programmer and adjust, see Repair Manual Audi 5000 1984-1988, Repair Group 87
^ Part No. 443 820 503 (Up to VIN 44G 053 400)
^ Part No. 443 820 503A (From VIN 44G 053 401)

^ replace vacuum check valve/hose assembly 3 (arrows)
^ Part No. 443 820 620 C

Note

Arrow on vacuum check valve must point toward intake manifold (vacuum source).

^ check vacuum reservoir 5 for oil contamination and clean if necessary
^ replace (hard black plastic) vacuum supply line 1 (located in engine compartment) with new (white) vacuum line
^ Part No. N 020 139 1

Filter Installation

^ locate rubber vacuum supply hose 1 (in engine compartment) leading from intake manifold to vacuum check valve 2

Note

The location and routing of the rubber vacuum supply hose differs from model year to model year and between turbo and nonturbo engines.

^ cut vacuum supply hose 1 between intake manifold and T-connector at a location where the hose runs horizontal
^ install hose clamps (2), Part No. N 024 510 3 over cut ends of hose
^ install filter Part No. 811 201 511 D into hose ends so that outlet 1 of filter is on top and arrow on filter points towards intake manifold (vacuum source)

Note

The filter acts as a trap for the engine oil and must be installed horizontally.

^ position hose clamps over filter ends and tighten
^ check climate control/programmer operation

Filter maintenance

^ periodically check filter for oil accumulation

If oil is present, ^ remove filter from hose and flush with a suitable cleaning solvent
^ re-install filter

WARNING

DO NOT use gasoline to flush filter.
