Electronic Climate Control
The Audi 5000 now features a new climate control system. This system is used from November 1985 production onwards.
The new climate control system is similar to the version used on earlier models. The driver can operate the system by pushing certain buttons on the control panel.
Blower Control
As with the previous system, the blower speed is controlled automatically. It will be fast when the difference between set temperature and interior temperature is large, and slow when it is small or the same.
The blower speed can now also be controlled manually. A LO or HI button can be pushed together with any selected mode to raise or lower the blower speed.
Temperature Control
The WARMER and COOLER buttons are used to raise or lower the selected temperature. This setting can be raised or lowered for automatic temperature control between 64°to 86°F (18° to 29°C).
This new system features fully digital electronic circuitry, self diagnostic capability and a new bi-level mode along with blower speed control.
If a temperature above 86°F (29°C) is selected, HI is displayed on the temperature display. If a temperature below 64°F (18°C) is selected, LO will be displayed. These are the maximum heating and cooling positions which will override the automatic temperature control.
Rear Defogger Switch
The rear defogger switch has also been deleted from the control panel. A separate on/off switch is now located in the center console area. This switch controls the power supplied to the rear window and outside rearview mirror heating elements.
Air Distribution
In the ECON and AUTO operating modes, the air distribution is automatically controlled. This is determined by the difference between the actual interior temperature and the selected temperature.
When heating is required, the majority of air will be directed out the floor outlets (5). During cooling, the air will be discharged through the center vents (3, 4).
The air distribution can now also be fixed in a bi-level mode. By pushing the BI-LEV button, air distribution will be fixed from the center and floor vents (3, 4, 5).
Operating Modes
OFF
The system is switched off. Fresh air intake is closed and the temperature display is turned off. The outside temperature can still be displayed.
ECON
The temperature, blower speed and air distribution is automatically controlled. The A/C compressor is shut off.
AUTO
The temperature, blower speed and air distribution are automatically controlled. The A/C compressor is turned on.
BI-LEV
The same operation as AUTO, however, air distribution is fixed at the center and footwell outlets (3, 4, 5) with a small amount from the defrost outlets also.
DEFROST
The temperature and blower speed are automatically controlled. All air distribution is directed toward the windshield outlets.
LO/HI
These buttons can be used together with all operating modes to raise or lower the fan speed. This function can be switched off by selecting another mode button.
