Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


AUDI 5000

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Clamp off coolant hoses at transaxle cooler, then disconnect hoses.
3. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
4. Install engine support fixture 10-222A or equivalent, then remove upper engine/transaxle bolts.
5. Remove starter motor, then remove 3 bolts securing drive plate to torque converter through starter opening.
6. Raise and support vehicle, then remove guard plate for RH axle shaft and right side guard plate from sub-frame.
7. Remove bolts securing inner CV joints to transaxle.
8. Remove exhaust pipe bracket from transaxle, then remove front exhaust pipe.
9. Remove selector cable holder and disconnect cable, then remove accelerator linkage pushrod.
10. Loosen accelerator pedal cable locknut, then disconnect cable from transaxle and transaxle support.
11. Remove filler tube and drain transaxle into suitable container.
12. Remove both transaxle supports from sub-frame.
13. Raise transaxle slightly with suitable jack, then remove transaxle supports from left and right sides.
14. Remove lower engine/transaxle retaining bolts, then separate transaxle from engine.
15. Position RH driveshaft to front, then lower transaxle from vehicle ensuring torque converter remains with transaxle.
16. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure torque converter is fully seated in transaxle prior to installation.
b. Torque engine/transaxle bolts to 41 ft.lbs., support to transaxle bolts to 30 ft.lbs., support to sub-frame bolts to 44 ft.lbs., CV joint bolts to 59 ft.lbs. and converter bolts to 22 ft.lbs.
