Idle Stabilization Checking (CIS-E III)

check these first
- engine oil temperature 80°C (176°F) minimum
- throttle valve in idle position
- throttle switch OK
- thermoswitch and/or temperature sensor OK
- all electrical consumers switched OFF
- A/C switched OFF
- pressure measuring equipment NOT connected
- radiator fan must NOT be running during measurements

NOTE: If fuel injection lines were loosened or replaced, raise engine speed to 3,000 RPM several times, then let idle for at least 2 minutes before performing checks

- disconnect idle stabilizer valve harness connector and insert test adapter VW 1315A/2 between idle stabilizer valve and harness connector
- switch multimeter US 1119 to mA range and connect to leads of test adapter VW 1315A/2

CAUTION: Always switch OFF the ignition while making or breaking electrical connections to the Idle Stabilization System.

- connect engine tester VW 1367 according to manufacturer's instructions

CAUTION: Make sure that the VW 1367 Top Dead Center pickup is fully inserted into the transmission housing.

- switch ignition ON
^ 550 ± 25 mA

If 430 mA is measured
^ check for open circuit between control unit and terminal 1 of ignition coil according to wiring diagram

If 0 mA is measured
- check for open circuit between control unit and thermoswitch, or a defective temperature sensor
- check for open or short circuit in wiring between control unit and idle stabilizer valve, or a defective idle stabilizer valve
- control unit defective
^ switch ignition OFF
