Whenever electrical power is interrupted in an Audi vehicle equipped with a theft protected radio such as the Wiesbaden, the radio goes into the safe mode. At this point the correct security code must be re-entered in order to re-activate the radio. This problem is often encountered when the repair technician disconnects the vehicle's battery in order to effect repair.
To prevent the above situation from occurring, a computer memory saver tool can be used. This tool consists of an adapter and a 9 volt battery that is plugged into the vehicle's cigarette lighter. The power supplied from this battery is enough to preserve the radio memory settings so that it will not go into the safe mode when the vehicle battery is disconnected. Before using the computer memory saver tool, always conduct a voltage measurement to assure that the battery is completely charged. The Wiesbaden radio needs a minimum voltage of 5 volts D.C. to keep the radio out of the safe mode. Secondly, turn off all electrical consumers that could drain your 9 volt battery (such as dome light).
The computer memory saver tool can be obtained from your local Snap-On Dealer (part # YA960) at a cost of $11.95 each. Price of this tool does not include the 9 volt battery. This tool can also be built in house using components that are available at Radio Shack or other stores (shown below bottom right).
