Condition:
Minor metallic ticking noises in engine between 1800-3200 RPM caused by design tolerances of piston pins/connecting rod bearings.
Production Solution:
Introduction of two-piece flexible drive plate
As of: 06/90 VIN 8A_LA279402 engine code 3A (4-cyl) only
Service Solution:
Replace original solid drive plate with two-piece flexible drive plate.

CAUTION

CAUTION
Before removing transmission, set engine to TDC. This ensures alignment of the drive plate to the transmission.
^ remove transmission, torque converter and drive plate (see Repair Manual Group 13).
^ install two-piece flexible drive plate
^ install 4.0 mm spacer A between crankshaft flange and drive plate
^ install 1.0 mm spacer B as shown
^ with new drive plate, using old bolts, measure distance a
a = 31.3 +/- 0.7 mm (1.2 +/- 0.03 in.)
if NO
^ install an additional 1.0 mm shim between drive plate and spacer A to achieve dimension (as shown)
^ remove drive plate and old mounting bolts
^ reinstall new drive plate with new mounting bolts C, using locking compound D 000 600 or equivalent
^ torque 100 N-m (74 ft.lb.)
^ set engine to TDC
^ using NEW torque converter bolts, reinstall torque converter and transmission
^ hand tighten torque converter bolts only
^ ensure torque converter and drive plate are aligned
^ fully tighten torque converter bolts
^ torque 30 N-m (22 ft.lb.)
Note
new bolts are shorter in length than original reinstall all other components in reverse order of removal
Note
On vehicles built prior to April 1988, VIN: 89_JA355106 it will no longer be necessary to install the cross drilled crankshaft conversion kit.
