Engine: Service and Repair
Engine is removed from above vehicle without transmission. Do not disconnect wire to clutch operating cylinder, power steering hoses and brackets, or A/C hoses.
1. Drain cooling system and disconnect battery ground cable.
2. If equipped with manual transmission, remove clutch operating cylinder.
3. Remove radiator and disconnect heater hoses from firewall.
4. Remove power steering pump and attach to body.
5. Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts and mount, then position compressor aside.
6. Support transmission with tool 10-222A.
7. Insert transmission mount 3147 into upper hole for engine/transmission mounting bolt (M12).
8. Disconnect exhaust pipe and all electrical connectors needed to facilitate engine removal.
9. Attach engine sling 2024A or equivalent and support engine weight with crane.
10. Separate engine from transmission, then lift engine from vehicle.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Check clutch release bearing for wear, replace if necessary. Lubricate release bearing and drive shaft.
b. Ensure that dowels for centering engine/transmission are in cylinder block.
c. Replace self locking nuts for engine mounts, then lower engine onto mounts. Loosely install self locking nuts, then rock or shake engine on mounts to align.
d. Adjust accelerator cable, then reconnect all electrical connectors.
e. Replenish coolant, check engine oil level, and adjust engine timing/idle.
f. Align exhaust system, without tension.
12. Note the following torque specifications:
a. Engine cover plate, 7 ft.lbs.
b. Exhaust pipe front to transmission bracket, 18 ft.lbs.
c. Control pressure regulator to engine block, 7 ft.lbs.
d. Cold start valve to intake manifold, 7 ft.lbs.
e. Front engine support to cylinder block, 18 ft.lbs.
f. Engine bearing to engine support, 26 ft.lbs.
g. Engine/transmission mounting bolts (M12), 41 ft.lbs.
h. Exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold, 22 ft.lbs.
i. A/C compressor bracket to cylinder block: (M8), 18 ft.lbs.; (M10), 22 ft.lbs.
