Differential Oil Change
Automatic 3-Speed Transmission 087 and 089
A. Replace Differential Oil
1. Place vehicle on hoist.
2. Open hood.
3. Lift vehicle.
4. Clean area around differential filler plug.
5. Remove filler plug slowly (see arrow in illustration).
CAUTION
Hypoid oil may be under pressure; wear goggles and place shop rag over plug before removal.
6. Use special suction pump, part number KL 2234, to remove oil from final drive. Wiggle suction pump hose down to bottom of differential cavity to collect all oil.
7. Use high performance gear oil, 1 liter, part number G 052 145 A2, to refill differential until a small amount of oil starts draining from filling hole. Use special suction pump also for replenishing when checking oil level during 15,000 mile service.
8. Reinstall filler plug and tighten to 25 Nm.
9. Lower vehicle.
B. Information Label
1. Clean upper radiator shroud area. Peel off label backing and affix label to clean surface.
C. Dipstick Tag
Note
This tag serves as a reminder to anyone to check both the transmission fluid and the differential oil level as well.
1. Remove ATF dipstick and clean with rag.
2. Hold dipstick in vice.
3. Press down dipstick sealing cap.
4. With lettering facing up, clip information tag to dipstick.
5. Place a dab of special glue (super glue or similar) on gap (see arrow in Illustration) to permanently affix tag to dipstick.
6. Check ATF level properly, following instructions as published in owners manual, and correct as necessary.
7. Place dipstick in retaining tube.
8. Close hood.
D. Revised Maintenance Schedule/Free Coupons
With this recall, the differential oil level check at 15,000 miles has been reinstated. It is requested that you ensure your service technicians adhere to this new schedule.
1. Use a thin marking pen and complete coupons by filling in:
^ Vehicle identification number
and
^ Coupon mileage as follows:
a. First coupon - mileage for next regularly scheduled 15,000 mile service interval.
b. Second coupon - mileage for next following regularly scheduled 15,000 mile service interval.
Example:
GS Recall performed at mileage: 68,000 miles
Coupon I - Next scheduled oil level check: 75,000 miles
Coupon II - Next following scheduled oil level check: 90,000 miles
