Shift Linkage: Adjustments
SELECTOR LEVER, ADJUST
AUDI 80/90, 4000 & QUATTRO
1. Remove console.
2. Shift selector lever into P position.
3. Loosen cable clamp nut.
4. Move transaxle shift lever to P position stop.
5. Torque cable clamp nut to 6 ft.lbs. and install console.
ACCELERATOR & KICKDOWN LINKAGE, ADJUST
Fig. 3 Accelerator and kickdown linkage adjustment.:
AUDI 80/90
Accelerator controls must be adjusted so that transaxle operating lever is at ``no throttle'' position with throttle closed. If adjustment is incorrect, shift speeds will be too high at part throttle and line pressure will be too high at idle.
1. Remove covering for throttle control, loosen nuts and remove locking clip.
2. Turn throttle cable brackets to stop position (full throttle) and hold. Tool 3004 or equivalent may be used to hold throttle cable brackets at full throttle.
3. Insert an 11/16 inch thick spacer in between accelerator pedal and pedal stop, then have a helper hold accelerator pedal down against spacer.
4. Pull throttle cable in direction of arrow, Fig. 3, and install locking clip.
5. Pull cable to transmission in direction of arrow until pressure against transmission kickdown position spring is felt.
6. Turn nut 1 against bracket and tighten nut 2, then remove tool 3004.
7. Check adjustment as follows:
a. Throttle lever must rest against idle stop when accelerator pedal is released.
b. Press accelerator pedal to full throttle position (not kickdown). Pressure point for full throttle position of accelerator pedal must be at 5/8 to 13/16 inch away from pedal stop.
c. Press accelerator pedal to to pedal stop (kickdown). Transmission operating lever must contact kickdown stop. Spring between cable brackets must be stressed.
d. On vehicles equipped with cruise control, adjust coupling rod by moving ball end .039-.059 inch.
e. On vehicles equipped with A/C, ensure that A/C switch does not switch on at full throttle position but does switch on only at kickdown position. There should be approximately 3/16 inch between switch and cable bracket at full throttle position.
