Strut Service

80/90 QUATTRO, 4000 QUATTRO & QUATTRO TURBO

When working on strut assembly on these vehicles, gap on tool VW340/5 must be enlarged to 2 3/16 inch.
1. Install tool VW340/5 or equivalent so that spring cannot jump out.
2. Compress spring with spring tensioner until upper spring retainer is free of tension.
3. Hold shock absorber shaft with suitable tool and remove slotted nut.
4. Remove strut bearing and spring retainer.
5. Remove spring tensioner.
6. Remove remaining strut components.
7. Remove shock absorber threaded cap and the shock absorber.
8. Reverse procedure to assemble. Torque shock absorber threaded cap to 130 ft.lbs. and the upper spring retainer nut to 36 ft.lbs.
