Fuel System
I Symptom:
Engine warning light on instrument panel does NOT illuminate when checking engine Fault codes.
49 States and Canada
Possible causes:
^ warning light NOT installed; new style diagnostic connectors installed instead (see section II) or
^ warning light NOT functional; (see section III on next page)
California
If California vehicle warning light is NONfunctional:
^ repair using correct wiring diagram
CAUTION
All California vehicles have an instrument panel warning light which MUST be functional.
II Determining type of Fault code

^ check if new style diagnostic test connectors are installed in the drivers side footwell
If new style diagnostic connectors ARE installed:
^ refer to repair fiche Group 28 for diagnostic procedures using the new style connectors
If new style diagnostic connectors are NOT installed:
^ see Fault code display and activation, using fuel pump relay (section III next page)

Note
This procedure is recommended for vehicles that do NOT have the new style diagnostic connectors.
^ construct test adaptor per sketch using parts from local supply
Adaptor parts:
2 - male connectors P/N N017 461 4 (or equivalent) 2 - pieces of insulated wire (14 or 16 AWG) approximately 6 inches long with each end stripped 1/4 inch 1 - insulated alligator clip
^ crimp a male spade terminal to end of one piece of wire
^ insert other end of wire along with second piece of wire into second male spade terminal and crimp
^ attach insulated alligator clip to remaining end of second wire
^ connect US 1115 black wire to alligator clip (+)
^ connect male spade (+) to top of fuel pump relay (+)
^ connect other male terminal to remaining terminal on top of fuel pump relay
^ connect US 1115 red wire to terminal 30 (battery +)
Note
Connecting and disconnecting the male spade connector (with a single wire) to the fuel pump relay will provide a switch and a display (US 1115) for performing fault diagnosis.
Refer to the repair manual Groups 25 and 28 for fault diagnosis applications.
