Steering Play, Adjusting

Two mechanics are necessary to do the following adjustment. Adjust the steering play with the engine off and the vehicle on the ground. The wheels must be in the straightahead position.

^ move steering wheel back and forth approximately 30~ from center position and listen for rattling and popping noises from steering gear
^ second mechanic must turn adjusting screw (see page 6) clockwise until rattling and popping noises are not heard inside vehicle
^ then turn in adjusting screw an additional 45~ (1/8 turn)
^ conduct test drive and readjust if necessary
^ if steering does not return to straightahead on its own, turn adjusting screw back (loosen) approximately 15~

^ conduct test drive

Power Steering Gear Assembly:

Note

Repair kits currently used for resealing the power steering gear assembly are deleted with the availability of the "short rack" assembly

Leaking which occurs at the valve housing must now be corrected by installing replacement O-rings supplied in the new repair kit, Part No. 443 498 025.
