Alternator V-Belt Slipping/Missing
Model(s):
100/200
M.Y. 1989-1991
Condition
Alternator V-belt may slip under extreme load conditions.
Important
The following procedure must be followed exactly as described. Failure to follow all instructions will diminish the effectiveness of this repair.
Service
Alternator V-belt, adjusting
Alternator V-belt tension should be adjusted by using a inch pound torque wrench and a 22 mm crowfoot in combination with the toothed rack, and tensioning gear (6).
- loosen mounting bolts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 (for toothed rack) until alternator can be pivoted with one hand.
- rotate tensioning gear 6 until proper deflection is obtained.
- tensioning gear (6) torque specifications:
New belt 8 N-m (70.7 in.lbs.)
Used belt 4 N-m (35.4 in.lbs.)
- tighten bolt (6) while maintaining proper torque on gear (6) 35 N-m (26 ft.lbs.)
- verify V-belt deflection at center point of belt between pulleys
New belt approx. 2.0 mm (5/64 in.)
Used belt approx. 5.0 mm (13/64 in.)
- tighten bolt 1, 2 and 3 20 N-m (15 ft.lb.)
- tighten bolts 4 and 5 35 N-m (26 ft.lb.)
NEW Alternator V-Belt Break In ("Run In") Procedure
- start the engine and run at idle
- turn on all electrical consumers i.e.: Air Conditioning rear window defogger; head lamps high beam; seat heaters ...
- let engine idle for at least 20 min.
Note
V-belt will stretch during this "Run In" period.
Caution
Vehicle should not be left unattended or unmonitored during V-belt break in idling period
- readjust V-belt tension as described above.
Note
In extreme high alternator load conditions (i.e. when many electrical consumers are used such as air conditioning ... ) it may be necessary to inspect and adjust V-belt 300 - 500 miles after initial installation.
