Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove transmission ground strap.
2. Clamp off, then disconnect coolant hoses from transmission cooler.
3. Disconnect speedometer cable from transmission.
4. Install engine support fixture 10-222A or equivalent, then remove upper engine-to-transmission bolts.
5. Remove starter motor, then remove three bolts securing drive plate to torque converter through starter opening.
6. Raise and support vehicle, then remove guard plate for righthand axle shaft, right side guard plate from sub-frame and front engine support bolts.
7. Remove bolts securing inner CV joints to transmission, detach axle shafts from transmission, then secure to underbody component.
8. Remove exhaust pipe bracket from transmission, then remove front exhaust pipe.
9. Remove selector cable holder, disconnect the cable, then remove accelerator linkage pushrod and cable guide from seat belt tension system, if equipped.
10. Disconnect accelerator rod. Loosen accelerator pedal cable locknut, then disconnect cable from transmission and transmission support.
11. Remove filler tube, then drain transmission.
12. Remove both transmission supports from sub-frame.
13. Raise transmission slightly with jack, then remove transmission supports from left and right sides.
14. Lower transmission, then raise engine with support to facilitate transmission removal. Remove lower engine-to-transmission retaining bolts, then separate transmission from engine.
15. Position righthand driveshaft to front, then lower transmission from vehicle ensuring torque converter remains with transmission.
16. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure torque converter is fully seated in transmission prior to installation.
b. Torque engine-to-transmission bolts to 41 ft. lbs., support-to-transmission bolts to 30 ft. lbs., support-to-sub-frame bolts to 44 ft. lbs., axle shaft to flange bolts to 59 ft. lbs. and converter bolts to 22 ft. lbs.
