Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
All Audi vehicles equipped with a functional fault indicator lamp have a permanent fault memory that must be manually erased following any repairs to the system, or when checking for recurring fault codes. One way to do this is to disconnect the battery for approx. 1 minute or more. This method, while very simple and effective, also clears any other memories that are normally maintained with the ignition turned "off", such as radio station presets, drivers seat position, trip/mileage computer, etc.To clear the fault memory only, use the following procedure.
1. With ignition turned "off", insert fuse into top of fuel pump relay (or connect jumper wire to test connectors as when displaying fault codes).
2. Turn ignition "on", wait at least 4 seconds then remove fuse (or jumper wire). The first output check should now be initiated.
3. Re-insert fuse into relay (or reconnect jumper wire) for 4 seconds then remove. Repeat this step until you have stepped through the output checks and code 0000 is displayed.
4. Re-insert fuse into relay (or re-connect jumper wire). Wait a few minutes then remove (Audi says to wait 10 seconds, however, it has been reported that this does not always do the trick, waiting several minutes will). Permanent memory should now be cleared.
5. Re-check fault code memory display to verify that memory has been cleared. If memory did not clear, try again only wait a little longer before removing fuse from top of relay in step 4 of this procedure.
