Ignition Timing: Adjustments

IGNITION TIMING:

The ignition timing should only need adjustment if the distributor has been removed.

Diagnostic Connectors - Activating Self Diagnostics:

1. To stabilize the ignition timing, connect jumper wire between diagnostic connectors under dashboard as shown in diagram (LED is not used for this procedure), or on vehicles without these connectors, insert fuse into top of fuel pump relay.

2. With a timing light, check the ignition timing at idle.
Timing should be 15° +/- 1° BTDC. Adjust as necessary.

NOTE: The ignition distributor has an anti-tamper cover installed over the distributor hold down bolt. To adjust the timing, the shear bolt securing the cover must be removed to gain access to the hold down bolt. Replace the shear bolt and the cover after adjustment.

3. Remove the jumper wire, and briefly raise the engine speed above 2500 rpm.
Timing should fluctuate between 7° and 20° BTDC.
4. If ignition timing was changed, recheck fuel mixture. See EMISSION CONTROLS.
