Fuel Tank, Removing and Installing
WARNING: FIRE HAZARD! Disconnect battery ground strap when working on the fuel system. Do not smoke or create any sparks where odor of fuel vapor is present.Fuel Tank Assembly:
1. Relieve fuel system pressure.
a. Open trunk and remove floor covering.
b. Remove fuel tank cover (floor of trunk).
c. Disconnect fuel tank electrical connector.
d. Start engine and let run until it dies.
e. Carefully loosen one hose connection at the fuel filter. Cover with a clean rag when doing so to avoid spraying fuel if any pressure remains.
f. Reconnect fuel tank electrical connector.
2. Drain fuel tank.
a. Disconnect fuel supply line in engine compartment.
b. Attach additional piece of hose to supply line and place open end of extension hose into suitable clean storage container. Be sure container is large enough to hold all the fuel from the tank.
Fuel Pump Relay Socket Terminal ID:
c. Remove fuel pump relay from fuel/relay panel, and connect jumper wire between receptacle terminals #48 and #52, to energize fuel pump.
d. Let pump run until the tank is emptied.
NOTE: If fuel pump will not operate, use a siphon pump and hose to drain the tank.
3. Disconnect battery ground cable.
4. Loosen rubber grommet from floor panel and disconnect hoses and fuel supply line from fuel tank.
5. Remove filler cap and loosen splash shield at top of filler tube.
6. Disconnect vapor hoses and remove expansion tank.
7. Disconnect electrical connector.
8. Remove fuel tank mounting bolts (2 bolts at the front of the tank).
9. Remove fuel tank through trunk.
Install in reverse order. If new tank is installed, secure sound insulator strips in same locations as on the old tank.
