Differential Carrier R&R

Refer to Fig. 5 during replacement procedures.
1. Remove underbody cover, then engage differential lock.
2. Scribe propeller shaft and differential flange for alignment during reassembly, if not already marked with white and black paint marks.
3. Remove propeller shaft to differential flange attaching bolts, then disconnect propeller shaft and tie out of way with wire.
4. Remove cover from left side axle shaft CV joint.
5. Remove right and left axle shaft to differential flange attaching bolts, then disconnect axle shafts and tie out of way with wire.
6. Disconnect parking brake cables at calipers, then press cables out of rubber guides.
7. Disconnect parking brake cable in front, then remove retainer for cable on left side.
8. Loosen heat shield, then install transmission jack VW 1383 or equivalent, to support axle.
9. Loosen nut a, Fig. 6, then remove three bolts (arrows).
10. Remove bolts for crossmember, then disconnect exhaust pipe and lower axle slightly.
11. Disconnect vacuum hoses and pull out of bracket with rubber guides.
12. Disconnect electrical connector for differential lock indicator lamp, then lower axle carefully.
13. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Propeller shaft and differential flanges must be installed so that painted marks or scribe marks are aligned.
b. Adjust propeller shaft, if necessary, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain/Drive/Propeller Shafts, Bearings and Joints/Drive/Propeller Shaft/Adjustments.
c. Tighten nuts and bolts to specifications.
