Number: 91-02
Date: March 29, 1991
Subject: Instrument panel printed circuit board solder connections, repairing
Model(s): 100/200 1989-1991 m.y.
Condition:
Speedometer is intermittent/inoperative (all 100/200, from 1989) or engine stalls intermittently on deceleration (100, from 1990 only) as the result of one or more loose/poor solder connections on the instrument panel printed circuit board.
Production:
Printed circuit board resoldered at supplier as of 9/90,
VIN 's: 44_LN 110 000
44_MN 016 000
Service solution:
^ while driving car, tap on instrument cluster and observe speedometer needle if speedometer needle jumps, a loose/poor solder connection may be the cause
Solder connection, repairing
^ obtain radio security code
^ disconnect battery ground strap
^ remove instrument cluster, see Repair Manual Group 90
^ carefully disassemble instrument cluster and remove printed circuit board (arrow)
^ using a magnifying glass, check upper speedometer connector terminals (arrows) for loose/broken solder connections
^ using a magnifying glass, check lower speedometer connector terminals (arrows) for loose/broken solder connections
CAUTION
DO NOT use a soldering iron larger than 30 Watts or damage to the printed circuit board will result.
^ resolder speedometer connector terminals as necessary
^ reassemble instrument cluster
^ reinstall instrument cluster into instrument panel
^ reconnect battery ground strap and reactivate (code) radio
^ check speedometer operation and/or engine performance (while driving vehicle, tap on instrument cluster and ensure speedometer needle does not jump)
