Sensor Plate Free Play

Fuel Pump Relay Socket Terminal ID:

Fig. 14 Air Flow Sensor Freeplay Adjustment:

Free play is the clearance between the control plunger and the sensor plate lever. It is measured on the side of the sensor plate closest to the fuel distributor, between the top of the sensor plate and the lower edge of the venturi cone.
1. Remove the fuel pump relay and install a jumper wire between relay panel terminals #48 and #52, to energize the fuel pump.
2. Run the fuel pump for about 10 seconds.
3. Lift the sensor plate lightly, until a resistance is felt (sensor arm contacting the control plunger), and measure the distance traveled.
a. Minimum play is 1 mm (0.040 in)
b. Maximum play is 2 mm (0.080 in)
4. If free play is not within specification;
a. Remove all fuel lines and electrical connections to fuel distributor.
b. Remove the fuel distributor from the air flow sensor housing, and set it upside down on a clean bench .

Fig. 11 Control Plunger Stop Adjustment:

d. Loosen the control plunger locknut slightly, and turn the center:
clockwise to increase clearance
counter-clockwise to decrease clearance, Fig. 9
1/4 turn of the stop screw equals approx. 1.3 mm (0.050 in).
5. Re-install fuel distributor on air flow sensor and re-check free play.
6. When re-installing fuel distributor, replace all seals and sealing rings.
7. After adjusting the free play, recheck idle speed, and fuel mixture.
