Automatic Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove upper engine-to-transmission bolts, then install engine support fixture 10-222A, or equivalent.
3. Remove both front engine stop bolts, then the starter motor.
4. Remove three bolts securing drive plate to torque converter through starter opening, then the converter dust shield.
5. Clamp off coolant hoses at transmission cooler, then disconnect hoses from cooler.
6. Raise and support vehicle, then remove bolts securing inner CV joints-to-transmission. Secure righthand drive axle aside with wire.
7. Mark position of lefthand ball joint, remove bolts securing joint to control arm, disconnect lefthand driveshaft, then secure lefthand wheel and suspension assembly.
8. Remove filler tube, then drain transmission.
9. Remove brackets securing exhaust pipe to transmission.
10. Remove selector cable and accelerator pedal cable brackets, then disconnect cable from transmission and selector lever.
11. Remove center bolt from transmission mount, then raise engine slightly with engine support fixture.
12. Remove throttle cable bracket retaining bolts, then the bracket.
13. Raise transmission slightly with suitable jack, then remove lower engine to transmission bolts.
14. Separate transmission from engine, then lower transmission from vehicle, ensuring converter remains with transmission.
15. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure torque converter is properly seated and can be rotated by hand. When converter is properly seated, distance between face of converter hub and transmission to engine mating surface is approximately 25/64 inch (10mm).
b. Torque engine-to-transmission bolts to 41 ft. lbs. and converter bolts to 22 ft. lbs.
c. Torque axle shaft to drive flange bolts to 33 ft. lbs.
d. Check wheel alignment and adjustment of controls and correct as needed.
