Cruise Control/Shift Lock
Circuit Description
Power to the cruise control and shift lock systems is supplied via fuse #12 (S12) on the main fuse/relay panel. The cruise control unit modulates the vacuum control motor to control vacuum and throttle position based on input from thecruise control switch, the brake light switch and the speedometer. A vacuum vent valve at the brake pedal vents the vacuum in the system and signals the cruise control unit to deactivate the vacuum control motor.
Shiftlock II, on 1989-1990 models, locks the gear selector lever in the Park or Neutral position until the driver steps on the brake. With input from the gear selector switch and the brake light switch, the park/neutral shift lock control unit operates the park/neutral shift lock solenoid (park/neutral position clutch).
Shiftlock II is activated approximately 0.2 seconds after the engine is started, or approximately one second after Park or Neutral are selected. The one second delay allows the driver to quickly shift between Drive and Reverse when necessary.
A speedometer input to the shift lock control unit prevents engagement of the shift lock at speeds above 3 mph.
WARNING: The driver-side airbag is an explosive device. Before removing the steering wheel or steering column switches, always disconnect the airbag power-supply connector, refer to "Air Bag Systems" for more information.
